Commercial Description:
This traditional American ale blends copious amounts of five different malts and various English and American hops to yield a rich and flavorful brew. As this ale is extremely complex in its flavor and quite full-bodied, the consumer is rewarded by letting a small amount warm in a brandy snifter and sipping it as one would a fine sherry. We age our Barleywine for one month in oak bourbon casks to add some vanilla and smoky notes and blend these flavors into a full-blown sensory experience to enjoy on a cold winter's eve.

Courtesy BOBOSKI!!! Pours a murky, cloudy, dark caramel brown, wth almost no head. Bready, malty aroma, hints of spice and pepper too. The taste had a unique bitter funky malt taste too it. Wierd. Bitter caramel, and dark syrupy malts pretty much round out the flavors. It tastes like its got a good amount of age to it, but this is just a 2006. Definitely is a barleywine, but the bitterness, especially in the finish kind of turned me off a bit.

Very hazy dark nut brown with a soapy small tan head. Nice aroma of tobacco and leather. Hop forward and bitter, dried fruit, with alcohol very noticable. Finishes bitter and dry.

Bottle from trade with bmartin08. Thanks Brian. Pours a dark amber color with almost no head at all. Aroma of fermented fruit, roasted malt and hops. Taste is semi sweet starting out but turns odd and sort of sour. Has a hot hoppy finish. I think it would be much better if aged a few years.

While this wasn’t the kind of hooker I’d hoped to be at the barleywine tasting, it was a good one. A deep chestnut body under a small ecru head. The aroma was rich with notes of malt, hops, dried fruit, and a hint of bourbon and wood. Full bodied and low carbonation. Smooth and rich on the tongue. The flavor was complex: Mix of sweetness, hops bitterness, and a pleasant alcohol warmth. Nice bottle, too. This was a great drink.

From a 500ml flip-top bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a light, tan head. I can only describe the aroma as a "clean barley" smell. Flavor is complex. There’s a sweet malt flavor, and then a bit of a smoky/chocolate/charred flavor. There’s also in interesting herbal sort of flavor... sort of like juniper, but hard to put my finger on. Bitterness kicks in midway and dominates the finish. Palate is nicely balanced. Interesting brew. Not quite what I had in mind when I picked this up, but an interesting choice nonetheless.

Bottle. [ Courtesy of madsberg ] Dark brown color with a virtually none head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, roasted, dark chocolate, port, vanilla, smoke / soy sauce ?, alcohol. Initial flavor is moderate to heavy sweet, finish flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with long duration. Long dry finish with a good balance. Body is medium to full, texture is oily / syrupy, carbonation is flat, finish feel is light alcoholic.

500 ml bottle. Pours a dark murky brown with an orange tint and a creamy beige head. Aroma of bitter lime, caramel malt and leather. Taste is slightly sweet, slightly sour. Flavors of caramel, vanilla, sour oak, bourbon and plums are present. Not your typical barleywine, but not bad.

Bottle sampled. Pours brown with an orange hue and a small light tan head. Aroma of fruit, caramel malt, vanilla, and alcohol. The flavor is sweet upfront, vanilla, caramel, oak, dark fruit, and finishes with spices, and a slight alcohol burn. Good brew.
