Pours a dark, dark brown that settles black in the snifter with a good, creamy light brown head that stays quite a while. Aroma is not surprisingly salt liquorice, peat, smoke, bacon, and alcohol, as expected from Islay whiskey. Underneath, notes of oaky vanilla can be detected. Basically smells like an islay whiskey. Luckily, I really like that smell. A sip reveals a richer palette of flavours than the nose gave away. The same elements are there, but now with roasted malts, dark, high cocoa chocolate, and a fruity side to it. it finishes with an ashy, smoked burnt dryness. It feels full in the mouth, the carbonation is fittingly sparse, but definitely noticeable. Creamy and smooth. I’m not sure if it’s possible to balance a beer with islay whiskey notes. This one is also too dominated by the whiskey notes, but far more balanced by the comparable BrewDog Paradox Smokehead. Still, I’d like it toned down a bit to let the RIS underneath shine through stronger.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 15, 2009 37,5cl bottle, 2006, label states 9,4%. Black, coarse tanned head. Loads of salt watery, peaty whiskey on the nose, dry smokiness, very enjoyable and real Islay character. Flavor has molasses, licorice whiskey alcohol, subtle smoke, not as peaty as the nose. Medium bodied, a bit hollow, mildly carbonated palate. Flavor is a bit of a let down, but the nose is a must for every Islay fan, very real. TBone (6868), Pori, Finland

Pitch black color, small brown color. Smokey, peat, whisky aroma. Mouthfeel is a bit for this ABV. Very strong peaty flavor, maybe ashy too. Lots of Islay whisky flavors. Long peaty smokey-tobacco aftertaste with some alcohol. The most interesting of these Whisky blends, Islay is all over this beer. oh6gdx (9155), Vasa, Finland
