The aroma of hop bitters with sweet fruits, this moves over to bitter fruits. The taste is hop bitter, with fruits like grapes and citrus. There hints of malts and some notes of alcohol. The aftertaste is bitter and a bit syrup. A beer with complex aromas and taste. arjoseph (594), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Apr 15, 2009 Blue wax. Purchased at Lakeview Binny’s. It’s aight. Pretty light bodied for a 12% barley wine, this had none of the malty fullness and richness I like in my barley wines -- it’s pretty much a hoppy american strong. Nice billowing "racing" and sudsy sparce lacing with a head that mostly dissipates over a dark amber beer. There’s some sweet golden raisin on the nose (much more than in the mouth), accented by floral and oily hops. Caramel sweetness in the mouth is dark and not too distinct, mostly acting as a nondescript baseline around which the hops play, sometimes juicy, always bitter. Not a bad beer at all, but my barley wine tastes are fairly specific, and this doesn’t push the right buttons for me (I don’t know why I rate barley wines more "to style" than any other style, but I do -- and by "to style" I mean "to what I want it to be"). Very american (wich I like) and very bitter (wich I like) and very well balanced with no sign of the high ABV. Finishes of on the sweeter side but still with a good underlaying bitterness and some warmth in the belly. Great.
