Blue wax. Purchased at Lakeview Binny’s. It’s aight. Pretty light bodied for a 12% barley wine, this had none of the malty fullness and richness I like in my barley wines -- it’s pretty much a hoppy american strong. Nice billowing "racing" and sudsy sparce lacing with a head that mostly dissipates over a dark amber beer. There’s some sweet golden raisin on the nose (much more than in the mouth), accented by floral and oily hops. Caramel sweetness in the mouth is dark and not too distinct, mostly acting as a nondescript baseline around which the hops play, sometimes juicy, always bitter. Not a bad beer at all, but my barley wine tastes are fairly specific, and this doesn’t push the right buttons for me (I don’t know why I rate barley wines more "to style" than any other style, but I do -- and by "to style" I mean "to what I want it to be").

Blue wax. New Years Eve! Grapefruit, resin, toffee, caramel and orange peel in the aroma. Reddish-copper color with a khacki head and a flimsy layer staying on top the whole way through. Nice scattered spotty lacing. Rich caramel malty flavor that’s perfectly balanced with equal parts resin hops and a healthy dose of citrus. It’s a bit sweet but kept in check and actually complimented quite well by the bitter hops. Very tasty and an awesome example of what an American Barleywine should taste like.

On tap at Three Floyds on 7/21/09. Pours gold with beautiful frothy eggshell head. Super citrusy hops aroma with a touch of caramel. Nice sweetness up front followed by a solid bitterness. Medium body with okay carb. Good bitter finish with a little touch of caramel on the tongue. Incredible american barley wine.

Yellow wax, vintage 2006 released 2007, 3 years old
Hazy dark amber color; small, persistent creamy head. Huge caramel, malt and hop aroma, light Bourbon vanilla too, nuts, light sweat, and light raisins. Good body strength, full malt flavor, caramel, sweet but not syrupy, sweet nuts too; strong bitterness, resiny and a bit fruity, with raisins; it’s actually less aggressive than modern American samples, and closer to my beloved Thomas Hardy’s Ale. The alcohol just creates a warming feeling in the end. Powerful and yet well balanced.

Bottle, 22oz. It’s an almost clear, golden beer with an off-white head. Resiny, grapefruity nose with malts in the background. Fluorine, beefstock and some roasted hints as well. Pretty much the same in the mouth, but slighlty more pronounced, and with a wonderful bitterness. Bitter, sweet and malty finish. Full-bodied and slighlty warming. A really lovely beer, maybe a tad on the sweet side though. 090828

I also think Uncle Steve procurred this for the guys. Shared with the Celticbrw himself, the Undaunting DrBayern, and Brian the Beer Pimp. Hoppy aroma. Pours dark copper color, with a head that lasts and holds nicely to the glass. The flavor is an easy hop flavoring . Easy to drink!
