| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 24, 2009 Pours black with a nice creamy and frothy tan head. Aroma is pretty biting and forward, lots of coffee and a rich nuttiness. Chocolate and some hints of dark fruit are apparent. Reminds me a lot of a baltic porter. Flavor starts with the standard coffee and licorice sweetness. Caramel and more bitter coffee comes forth with a nice sort of subdued dark fruits that stay in the background. Very dry in the aftertaste and coffee like bitterness. Medium, nearly medium to full body. Nice stout, pretty bitter and biting, but still pleasant. kmeves (1080), Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 21, 2009 Pours a very black body with a small tan head. Aroma is medium sweet with grapefruit, some chocolate, light peach. The flavor is bittersweet chocolate, roast, woody and light citrus. The finish is dry grapefruit and a bit minerally. Light to medium body. Interesting hop choice for the aroma although I must say it worked for me. punkrkr27 (638), Berkley, Michigan, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 17, 2009 Black pour with little head and a small tan ring. Nice deep roast aroma with strong chocolate notes and lots of toasted, piny, hops. There’s also some hints of molasses, brown sugar, brandy, damp wood, smoke, and a faint vinous quality. Very toasty and chocolaty flavor with some molasses and brown sugar and lots of fresh, piny hops. Creamy, full body with a moderate amount of carbonation. Zinister (1206), Houston, Texas, USA

Roasty malts, chocolate, coffee and licorice. Flavor is the same with some dark fruits, spice and smoke. Great beer. shigadeyo (2263), Harrison, Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 10, 2009 3/10/2009: My general impression of Three Floyds beers are that they are good, but over-priced (at least the bottle is FULL). However, that having been said, I now see why I still buy a bottle of their beer every now and then. They are rich and full of flavor. They also don’t hold back on those glorious, flavorful hops! Black Sun Stout is no exception. Its aroma is super hoppy; lots of FRESH pine and floral hops. Underneath that green, fresh, lively hoppiness is a rich, chocoate maltiness. The flavor is very similar. The super fresh and substaintial hop flavor gives way to a moderately bitter-sweet roasted maltiness with significat hints of chocolate and coffee. Delicate threads of citrusy orange hops and candy-like flavors can also be found in the mid-palate. The finish is just a touch dry and the roasted coffee with some char flavor draws me back in for drink after drink. All of this beer flavor and aroma goodness is presented in a nearly black, smooth, medium-full bodied liquid that has a frothy beige to tan-colored head. This is a really nicely done stout. Maybe my real problem with 3F is that the beer just disappears too quickly since it’s quite good leaving me $10+ lighter in the wallet much faster than I would have liked to be!
1 pint 6 fl oz bottle from West Side Liquor and Wine Shop in West Harrison, Ohio ($8.99+tax). Rating #465 for this beer.

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 10, 2009 Courtesy of Sammy. It is pitch black with a huge, brown and creamy head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and licorice. The flavour has a light sweetness and a light roasted bitterness. It has notes of coffee, licorice, chocolate, light smoke, citrus and berries. The long finish has a light roasted bitterness and hints of berries. The flavour is rather intense even if the ABV is relatively low, nice indeed. markwise (1187), 15 Minutes from Kuhnhenn in, Florida, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 8, 2009 Thanks retorp for the share. Pours dark browm with an off-white head. Nose is chocolate, coffee, vanilla, licorice, dark malt, and roastiness. Flavor is slightly oaky with chocolate, smooth dark malt, and noticeable hops. Medium to thick mouthfeel with roasted malt throughout and a complex blend of sweet and dry. Pawola22 (771), Kansas City, Missouri, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 2, 2009 22oz bottle. Pours a jet black body with a fizzy, dark brown, quickly dissipating head that leaves an oily and runny lace. Aroma is very hoppy for the style, which is surprising except for the fact that this is a FFF beer, which doesn’t surprise me one bit. Lots of the typical floral hops from FFF as well as a juicy citrus. Moderate amount of roasted dry coffee grounds, some ripe cherries, and a woody backing. Lots of sweet caramels and bittersweet chocolate. Flavor is very similar and right on track with the aroma. Roasted coffee and floral hops dominate from beginning to end. Quite sweet up front with the mellow dark chocolate and vast amount of caramel malts. Finishes very dry and woody with a touch of citrus. Lingers for quite a long time. Palate is light and smooth with a small amount of finishing carbonation. Very clean for such a complex dry stout. Overall, really solid dry stout. I remember having this on tap at DLD ’08 and loving it. Glad to have finally found a bottle to rate.
