Three Floyds Black Sun Stout is a deep black beer with a nicely formed brown head. The aroma is present, but with lighter characters than expected. This is a very viscus stout in nature, but not watery in taste. While this is a winter brew for Three Floyds, the flavor and finish are light enough to enjoy year round. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 28, 2008 Pours a very dark mahogany brown color with a dissipating, foamy tan head. Soapy, sudsy sheeting slowly droops down the glass, leaving minimal spotting behind. The nose is as hoppy as a stout can possibly be, with crushing pine and spruce notes dominating what seems to be a roasty, chocolate and coffee background. The flavor is just as hoppy, with pine resin overpowering the malty elements. Baker’s chocolate and espresso come through in the background, but serve more as afterthoughts to the intense bitterness. The mouthfeel is substantial, but very dry and overly carbonated. Kind of chalky feeling. Overall, it seems as though the intense hopping is an attempt at covering up numerous flaws within the brew. Its just too damn hoppy for the style. I’m not a big fan. badlizard (2380), Berkeley, California, USA

Typical Three Floyd’s hop aroma accompanied by large dry roasted coffee malt. Very light bodied...a little bit crunchy =) with sophisticated carbonation. Its always good to see a dry stout that is actually dry...ha! Coffee malt, fresh hops, and some caramel malt maybe. Easy drinking stout...and I mean it this time.. understated flavors. This is my prelude to DLD 08! cya in a few hours =) Viper666 (630), Greenfield Park, Quebec, Canada
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 10, 2008 22 oz bottle given to me by tjthresh. I believe this is a bottle from 2007. Pour is deep black, with a one inch dark tan head in my snifter. Head settled slowly, with a nice rocky appearance. Aroma of bitter pine hops and roasted coffee. There is also some dry fruit sweetness. Taste has a really interesting combination of the pine hops, the roasted malt and the fruit sweetness which is more like plum in the taste. Nothing is terribly dominant, great balance. The palate is very wet and mouth coating. The bitterness lasts a decently long time, as does the soft sweetness and roast. Really well done Stout, and crazy drinkable. Thanks for lugging this one back from Indiana Tom! AgentSteve (1378), SF Bay Area, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 5/5 | 14/20 | Apr 10, 2008 Updated: Sep 11, 2008This isn’t a dry stout at all. More like a sweet or standard. Pours more like an Impy with its oily consistency and deep tan colored head. Nose is coffee, sugars and subtle roasted malt. The flavor is quite complex with a substantial hop presence, all influences found in the nose, but what stands out most is buttered popcorn, both in the flavor and the mouthfeel. Always an experiance with 3F. bgrubb7 (6), Illinois, USA does not count | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 7, 2008 On nitro tap at the brewpub. Overall this is my favorite Stout hands down to date. Complex yet smooth. Subtle notes of Coffee, Chocolate, slight raisin & malt sweetness, with more hop finish than the average stout. Very well balanced, with no single trait too overpowering. I need to find this in the bottle to see if it stands up to the draft offering at FFF.
