A pitch black beer with a brown head. The aroma is very hoppy combined with light notes of malt. The flavor is sweet and dominated by roasted malt, but also with light notes of wood.

(Bottle 65 cl) Pours completely black and opaque with a small, beige head. Quite a refined aroma of fruity aroma hops. Fairly good body with lightly sweet, hard roasted malt. Pleasant and complex malt composition with notes of chocolate. Some lovely, lightly citrusy hops create a balance close to perfection. 030606

Thick and dark with inviting tan head. Strong aroma of citrusy hops — grapefruit, orange and lemon — and sweet chocolate with notes of coffee bean. The flavor is dominated by the hops — the orange, grapefruit and bitterness. Your taste buds have to work a little harder to get at the undercurrent of sweet malts, but it’s there. Caramel, chocolate and vanilla. The thin to medium body is well carbonated and the mouthfeel is juicier than other dry stouts I have had. Clean throughout with a lingering taste of citrus. Heck, if dAchouffe can throw citrusy hops at a tripel, why can’t 3F hop up a dry stout? The combination of IPA and tripel works better for me. Still, Black Sun is unique and enjoyable though there is something disjointed about the bittering hops dominating the sweet chocolate.

Deep black with a small tan head. The aroma is loads of pine and floral hops (about time the Floyds started throwing some hops in their beers :-). Flavor is big with roasted coffee malts, smoke and molasses. Rounded out by a dry, piney, fruity hops finish. Nice medium body with carbonation that’s nice but not too intrusive. Very good if you enjoy the Floyd’s heavily hopped style.

Bought in Blacksburg, VA. Bomber. Beer was a nearly opaque, dark brown-black color with an average-sized, frothy, off-white, mostly diminishing head. This brew was terribly lovely, something to really sink your choppers into. Malty with moderate notes of cookie, caramel, chocolate and coffee, heavy notes of roasted grain; hoppy with moderate-to-heavy notes of herb, apricot, resin/pine; light yeast notes of cobwebs and dough; Light miscellaneous notes of vanilla and moderate notes of alcohol. The flavor was moderately sweet, lightly acidic and heavily bitter with a long, lightly sweet, lightly acidic/tangy, moderately bitter finish. The body was light-to-medium, the texture was watery and the carbonation was fizzy. I want to get my mits on more of this brew.

Very dark, near black. Medium crema-colored rocky head, recedes with nice lacing. Aromas of floral hops, malt, citrus, metal, and alcohol. Big roasted malt flavor, with earth, peat, smoke, charcoal, molasses, coffee and dark chocolate with a solid bitter citrus hop finish. Slightly thicker than average but the used motor oil consistency of some stouts.

Bottle (bomber). Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate), moderately to heavily hoppy (apricot, resin), with notes of vanilla and alcohol. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. A black IPA, you might say. Ehhh. Very hoppy, with an abrasive, sour flavor balance. Seemed hotter than it is. Not enjoyable.
