| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 16, 2008 From an imperial pint pour at the Munster, Indiana Brewpub, this poured a very clear rich amber color with off-white head and good lacing .Nose of ripe fruit, light citrus, and caramel malts. Smooth but lively mouthfeel. Flavor is complex as well, with caramel malts, toffee, nuts, floral hops, adn some pine notes. Medium but bitter finish. Good brew. I purchased a bomber to take home and share. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 15, 2008 Updated: Aug 16, 200822 oz. bomber bottle, some nice San Francisco tattoo artwork on the label, no bottling/freshness date, sampled in a imperial pint glass. Sediment is readily visible in the bottle, especially near the bottom.
L: Poured a cloudy sunburnt copper with a quick rising fluffy head of beige foam that slowly settled into a creamy, sudsy skim. With splotchy rings of lace circling the brim of the glass, Blackheart is a classy looking EIPA that yearns for you to give it a taste.
S: Oranges and peaches whose overall sweetness is modified by a secondary backing of woody pine with a touch of minty herbs, the hops have a nice fresh pungent aroma. Framing the edges is sweet caramelized malts with a light hint of nuttiness. The more I whiff on Blackheart, the more endearing the aroma becomes.
F: Plush and soft feeling in the mouth with a slick resiny oiliness on the tongue, Blackheart has an airy medium body, creamy crisp in the finish, that is a pleasure to consume.
T: While the hops are the dominant force in the taste, there is a delectable underlining pale malt sweetness, caramelized crystals with touches of sugar coated nuts in the finish. The hops start out as a mix of sweet and sour fruits, peaches with a splash of apricot juice, balanced by flavors of orange pulp and tangerine rinds. In the middle, tastes of pine resins and woody, herbal stems. The alcohol is barely noticeable, just a low grade spicy warmth in the back of palate, it’s true strength is well concealed.
D: Blackheart is dangerously easy to drink, I am finding the need to remind myself that the ABV is 9% and I need to slow down and savor. I bet this is even tastier from the cask. If you love all varieties of hops and IPA styles, then I would highly recommend you give Blackheart a try despite its high price. Blackheart is another testament to the brewing skills at Three Floyds, American big beer at its best. JB175 (1664), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 13, 2008 Bottle from SQNfan - thanks! This one has a nice amber color with a medium head. Aroma is very citrusy with a heavy sweetness and some floral essence. Flavor is sweet, citrusy, and a bit floral with the hops dominant and the malts doing a nice job. This one finishes well and was pretty good with spicy food. I want more! hopdog (5607), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 13, 2008 22oz bottle. Poured a medium and clear amber color with a small sized off white head. Aromas of some earthiness, floral, otasted caramel, and light pine. Tastes of caramel, tea, citrus, and tolasted malts. egajdzis (3631), Spring Mount, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 13, 2008 Poured a light golden amber color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of vanilla, floral hops, toffee malts, grass, and caramel. Taste of sweeter caramel malts, vanilla, toffee, citrus fruits, light pine, lemongrass, and toasted malts, with mild bitterness in the finish. Nice change of pace for Three Floyds, and even better than this year’s anniversary beer. valpoaj (362), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Aug 12, 2008 Poured from bomber...medium yellow-amber color with very little head. Aroma is very nice...somewhat light, but still good levels of floral hops, some mild spice/perfume, and some light roasted malts...very subdued for FFF. Flavor is very nice for someone like myself who does not love the hop bomb as much as the average RBian. Good floral and piney hop flavors are well balanced by toasty and sweet malt flavors. This beer exceeded my expectations, though again, the price will likely preclude a repeat purchase.
