Caramel with big, foamy off-white head / Nose of fresh hops & citrus / Medium body, forward malts match big hops / Flavors of pine, orange, grapefruit, and a big dose of caramel / Outstanding - a companion brew to Dreadnaught, with a more modest hop profile plus the caramel kick. Aroma of cranberry and Pez.This is another real winner from 3F! Lots of hops and earthy old citrus in the middle, vanilla with pepper with an almost creamy mouth. The finish is straight hops - very crisp for this style. I wish I could afford two or three more right now! ajbitt (46), , Indiana, USA

Very different than any other IPA I have had. Slightly sweet. Appearance: Dark golden, more amber than any IPA i’ve had before. Unique so far looking forward to taste. Flavor: Apricot, spiced pumpkin, pear - tastes like it smells. IBUs only apparent on finish. Has chocolate earthy overtones at every point. Palate: Soft, smooth, porter like finish with slight carbonation. Very, very nice. Overall Impression: A truly unique beer. Seems weird to think of it at an IPA with the chocolate, earthy fruits, and waning bitterness. Unique and fantastic brew. Crosling (1854), Loveland, Colorado, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jul 4, 2008 Light gold color with a bounitful head of foam. Great hop nose, pure 3 Floyds. Minty, super juicy and citrusy, also a little herbaceous as well. Flavor has a ton of character and is nearly perfect. Incredibly well balanced. Super hoppy and bitter, with a lot of juicy citrus character, a lush malt character of caramel and sugared fruits, and then on top of all that, it has well intergrated oak hints of vanilla and toasted wood. A surprise. What a well crafted brew. Ughsmash (4042), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA

Poured a lovely copper color, with a off-white dense head. Piney/hoppy aroma, with some grapefruit, lemon, and something remniscent of caramel. Medium-bodied, and bursting with flavor. The fruits and grasses were well-balanced with the signature 3F hoppy bitterness. Coated the mouth well. Finish was long and hoppy. foundmd (163), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

Aroma of piney hops and sweet malts. Balanced hop flavor with carmel, fruit (peaches & apricots), pine, oak and rye. Soft, carbonated mouthfeel with a peppery finish. Alcohol and bitterness is well balanced. A very drinkable and unique IPA, complete with amazing label artwork. merlin48 (516), New Tazewell, Tennessee, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jul 2, 2008 22 oz bottle pours a hazed rusty orange amber body with a small beige head. Lots of clingy lace sheets the glass. Aroma is bold, with citrusy pineapple and orange joined by some florals and a hint of biscuity malt. Exceptional palate. Medium body supports a velvety carbonation with an ideal earthy hoppiness. Taste begins with blood orange and pineapple accented by unbuttered toast and honey. Hops take a bitter pine cone turn midway through but the citrusy pineapple sweetness recovers to dominate the finish. Exceptionally well balanced. Probably the best beer I’ve had all year. A wild cartoon drunkard on the label. Amber pour. Lacing hangs off the top of the glass like curtains off a rod. Wonderfully complex aroma - tangy, sweet, and floral, with a whiff of smoke - superb. The flavor is - wow! - exactly as advertised. Blackheart is a cross between an earthy English bitter and a sweet American imperial IPA. All English ingredients with noticeably English hops, but brewed in the midwest USA with an American extreme beer attitude. In its uncompromising use of all out hops and malty sweetness, it reminds me of some of Dogfish Head’s better releases. There is a yeasty, English hop aftertaste that is characteristic of many Britlish beers. Blackheart is the best blend of English bitter and American IPA that I’ve ever had - never mind that it is the only one I’ve ever had. Underrated i.m.o. This is a great beer!
