Commercial Description:
Ireland's first and last Ard Ri (high king) of the whole Gaelic race, Brian Boru was born in Munster Ireland around 940. His mother was killed by Vikings when he was a child. He spent his life uniting the Irish tribes to become the first king of Ireland, only to be killed at Clontarf on Good Friday, 1014 putting down a rebellion by the King of the province of Leinster. Brian Boru Irish Brand Red Ale is a very rich caramelly ale with toffee, citrus, and pineapple aroma. Brian Boru is brewed with several malts and Amarillo hops. Slainte!

Fairly straightforward in its taste and not very complex. Very attractive color with no much head. Aroma is of malty sweetness. Flavor is straight up malt with muted hoppy undertones. Slightly sweet with a mildly smoky nature to the sweetness. Enjoyable... would purchase again.

22 ounce bottle purchased from Thorpes in East Greenwich, RI. Initially, there was a strong piney hop aroma, but this burns off after a couple of seconds to reveal a very sweet, caramel, malty aroma. Slightly floral, but very sweet--kinda of butterscotchy sweet aroma. Transparent amber color with a quickly dissipating off-whitish head. Slightly metallic flavors to start and to finish. There is lots of chewiness in the body with caramel malts and toasted malts. Turns a little more burnt to finish in terms of maltiness. A bit acidic in nature. This is a flavorful, huge malt bomb.

Pours red with a thin tan head. Smells of roses, yogurt, malt. Tastes malty with earthy hoppiness and spicey elements.

Dark red-brown pour with a thin and lasting tan head. Pretty nice aroma, especially for an irish ale with a pretty deep malty nuttiness and some light hopping. More hops in the taste than I expected and they initially explode and tingle on the tastebuds. Malt lasts through the middle and into the finish. Almost some chocolate in the finish. I thought it was pretty darn good, especially considering the style.

Bottle: Poured a deep clear amber color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention. Aroma of citrus hops is clearly dominant. Taste is a mix between some sweet malt caramel and some overpowering hops. Seems to me this another one of those 3F recipe where they take a traditional style (Pride & Joy, Robert the Bruce) and drop some major hops on top of it. A bit too one-dimensional for my own taste.

22 oz bottle, sent by slob - woohoo! Pours clear, deep garnet red with a moderate beigey head that diminishes quickly. Aroma is loaded with rich caramelly malts and citrus hops, smells like sweet orange juice with floral notes and a touch of honey. True to 3F’s form, it’s hop heavy, again some toasty and light caramel malts in evidence, but this one is dominated by the bold citrus and floral hops and a little spice in the finish. Sweet and tart at the same time, and nicely balanced. Medium body and creamy carbonation. Very enjoyable.

Call me a bumb, but if this didn’t have 3Floyds on it, I woulda rated it this way. Poured a deep amber-reddish color with some murkiness. The head was decent but the lacing kinda week. The aroma was of caramel and resinous, piney, and some sort of spice (juniper?). The flavor was of caramel malts, some citrus notes (pineapple works, as written on the bottle), and light pine and resinous hops. Mouthfeel was a bit thin and watery, although the flavor plenty strong. Irish? Seemed like a regular old American Amber to me.

It seems that Three floyds gets a pass on this website for whatever they put out. THere is aboslutely nothing spectacular about this beer. It does not deserve its high rating. It is average and unexceptional in every regard. A good beer - just not exceptional
