Commercial Description:
Ireland's first and last Ard Ri (high king) of the whole Gaelic race, Brian Boru was born in Munster Ireland around 940. His mother was killed by Vikings when he was a child. He spent his life uniting the Irish tribes to become the first king of Ireland, only to be killed at Clontarf on Good Friday, 1014 putting down a rebellion by the King of the province of Leinster. Brian Boru Irish Brand Red Ale is a very rich caramelly ale with toffee, citrus, and pineapple aroma. Brian Boru is brewed with several malts and Amarillo hops. Slainte!

Clear, deep copper appearance with a small tan head and good lacing. Piney, resinous aroma that led to a smooth, well rounded, medium-bodied mouthfeel. Hoppy taste up front warms to reveal floral notes among the caramel malts. Finished slightly spicy along with some soft fruits.

Nice red/brown color. There is presence of hops and citrus on the nose. Very hoppy on the taste with a smooth and lingering finish.

Red ale. Creamy heads that beads as it disapates. The aroma is citrus-hoppy. Smells more like an american IPA. Like Bell’s Two-Hearted, but not as pugent. The hops are quite dominate. Sharp pineappley palate. Delicious, a great way to start off St. Patrick’s.

very good, particularly within the irish ale style. a wonderful departure for FFF, but still a good example of the company. floral certainly, the taste was somewhat marred by the Dark Lord i had before it. RERATE: beautiful aroma, but the taste feels thin. comes on strong, but disappears fast. notable hops

Rerate. From the ’07 Batch. Pours a clear reddish orange with a one finger beige head. Aroma is very hoppy and un-Irish ale-like. Very pineapple and grapefruity hops, with a lot of high quality marijuana herbal bits in there (thank you hippie roommate!). I don’t think I’ve ever gotten that much or that distinct weed in a beer. There is also some caramel toffee--moreso caramel--and a bit of yeasty bread. Once the head finally dies down some dirty unsweetened cocoa shows up. The flavor is very herbal and pineapple fruity with some chocolate and some lactose towards the finish. The finish is semidry with minimal bitterness. Burps lots of pineapple. Medium body with low carbonation. I would expect such a thing from 3F--an otherwise malt dominated style hopped the crap out of. Old rating followsClear copper with a moderate diminishing tan head. Aroma of pine and grapefruit, like pretty much all of 3F’s brews. Some caramel malts also are noted. Piney hops up front, but immediately cut with the caramel malts. Fair amount of sweet and fruity malts. Fairly dry finish. I agree with sliffy that it’s not a typical irish ale. Not my favorite 3F brew, but certainly tasty. 9-3-8-3-16--3.9

From a 22oz. Three Floyds capped brown bomber bottle with no freshness date, 2006 version. Made an impressive appearance, poured a cloudy caramel brown with a large pillowy pale tan/whitish head that reduced to a thin cake-like lacing with a good deal of ringed sticking. Had a big, sweet, candied, caramel malt aroma with some tropical fruit notes, mainly pineapple, hints of peppery spices and scents of a buried distinctive Three Floyds yeastiness. Good carbonation and a slick, smooth, almost creamy, but textured full bodied mouth feel, very good drinkability. Delicious tasting, a sweet caramel maltiness, some toffee flavors, a gentle, rolling tropical fruity hop bitterness and a crisp, sweet, spicy finish with a lingering fruity bitterness.

Red pour, crisp and hoppy. Not a normal irish ale, but who cares. I’ll probably be downing this on St. Patty’s.
