2009 vintage shared by JMerritt. Pours a dark black with a red Merlot red to it. Almost no head but the thin layer of bubbles produced a dark tan color. Beer had a med/heavy carbonation rated and was pretty viscous when poured. Aroma had a very strong prune fruit note, chocolate, lots of alcohol, some raisin with a slight soured malt note at the end of the nose. Flavor was composed of first chocolate followed by a slightly bitter coffee bite, then a dark fruit, vanilla and ended on a strong molasses flavor. The beer itself is very chewy and high alcohol presence gives it an almost wine-like feeling. Good brew overall but I definitely see this one as a one time offering as it is pretty much good as an "extreme" beer but not an every day type of drink.

2008 vintage, served in tulip Appearance: Dark brown, almost black with the faintest amount of brown head. Aroma: Lots of vanilla, molasses and some roast. Flavor: Huge flavor, absolutely huge. Sweet all the way through, with coffee, vanilla, and even some tart cherry. The alcohol shows itself. Finish seems like it’s hours long. Seems to be too much for the ladies in attendance. Certainly not meant for mass consumption. Palate: Viscous and smooth. Lovely. Overall: Seems like it needs some food to pair with. A little too sweet on the finish to drink a lot, but overall a very tasty brew.

2009 vintage bottle, shared with Narnad. Very dark, bordering on black, with red tints along the edges. Very small, light brown head. A lot of alcohol in the nose along with a load of burnt, roasty coffee, dates, bittersweet cocoa and red grapes. Flavor is moderately alcoholic, loads of sticky molasses, some bitter tannins and a bit of vanilla. Finish has a little green, herbal note I couldn’t quite identify underneath the vanilla sweetness and burnt malt. Some complexity, but overall I’d consider it mainly one dimensional. Alcohol not well hidden and a bit distracting.

Brewed in the USA... This 2006 Bottle was courtesy of my old high school buddy, Woody !!! thanks again beer brother. Almost pitch black in color with some reddish highlights on the rim of the glass, and a head that only becomes visible when swirled. Aroma of dark cocoa, molasses, malts, dark fruit and mild booze. Taste of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla and a hint of raisins. The mouthfeel was like drinking a chocolate milk shake at first then becomes very slick with some alcohol burn at the finish. This Imperial Stout has been on my top 10 beers to try in the world. Thanks to a friend this all became possible !!! I think this brew lives up to the hype, but i would like very much to partake in a fresh bottle to see the differences between them. Satisfaction Guaranteed !!!

Huge thanks go out to BA’s Woody Chandler for making this possible and BeerGestapo for sharing it with me. A 2006 vintage. Poured black with some blood red highlights near the edges, no real amount of head just some brown bubbles here and there. Swirling the glass leaves a thick oily coating everywhere the beer touches. As I took my first sniff I was afraid it may not live up to the hype. Smelled sweet with notes of molasses, brown sugar, cocoa, and a bit of dark fruit. It almost reminded me of a Lagunitas stout. My fears were quelled however as soon as I took a sip. Oh man that is some good stuff! The first thing I noticed was how thick it was. Like a big gulp of chocolate milk. Then the taste spread over my eager tongue. Notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and molasses. As it got a bit warmer I picked up a hint of earth and herbal mint buried deep within its murky depths. It was very sweet for an RIS but had enough bitterness to keep it in check. The finish was divine as well. I could taste dark chocolate and espresso for minutes after a swallow. An amazing beer and well worth a trip to Indiana no matter how far that may be.
