[thank you, drmatt]
2007 edition
Pours a thich motor oil pitch-black with a very small beige film head. Aroma is smoky, light roasted, very complex roastiness and a little rubber. Oily tar-like mouthfeel. Flavour is roasted, cocoa, rye bread, sweetness. Very sticky. Some seaweed (!?), raisins and naturally very vinious. Well... This is the nr. 5 highest rated beer - and it surely shouldn’t be. This IS a great beer, but not a stunning beer. Not at all! Far to sticky sweet in my opinion - and it feels like no ’direction’ has been chosen - too many tones end up being less than the whole.
Schultsc (417), Henderson, Nevada, USA Oct 12, 2008 2008 vintage. Thanks cpferris for the trade. Opaque black with a thin, very fine, multi-hued mocha-brown head. Appears sticky, shimmering, and highly viscous when swirled with a dark brown slick clinging to the glass. Aroma reeks of dark caramel and berry fruit malt sweetness with dark chocolate, coffee, molasses, and soy sauce. This is combined with a dark roasted grain edge, a soft hops spiciness, and a pit of a brandy-like alcohol presence. Posesses a totally malt-driven flavor profile that is expressed across a wide range of characteristics: burnt sugar, treacle, roasted grain, coffee, chocolate, toffee--all of which is balanced with what I’m sure is an absurd amount of hops that just barely manages to edge through the malt. There are multi-dimensional alcohol flavors here as well, which are very well integrated considering the size of this beer, and is one of the most unique aspects of this beer. It is both boozey and reigned in, integrated and forcefully expressive, resembling both Cognac and ruby port--a pleasant conundrum. The leads us through the huge, high;y-viscous body that is completely mouth-coating. Your palate is left totally saturated with roasted grain bitterness supplemented with hops. Quite an experience--totally over the top. zebracakes (1006), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 12, 2008 2008 bomber, thanks to the fabulous CMUBEERMAN.
Pours tar, tan head. Aroma is well balanced and blended, chocolate, coffee, malt, vanilla, smoke, slight pine & anise. I can barely detect the alcohol, amazingly smooth aroma. Flavor is oily, and is sweet at first, honey vanilla, chocolate, but mellows into creamy bitter coffee, meaty, smoky, with molasses lingering at the finish. Amazing! This is one of the finest beers ever made. Aliendan approves too! ;) rednapx3 (25), , Isle of Man Oct 11, 2008 2007 Bottle
Looks like Used Motor Oil and it coats the glass like glue. Head ? Well. . . Next to nothing . . . and carbonation, not a lot to be found. . .
Aroma, Dried fruit, musty almost like musty bakers Chocolate.
Oh my god the front palate is bad. . . Finish is decent, not to bad actualy on the finish.
Tastes like Espresso, Chared Mapel Syrup, and Dark Chocolate.
You buy a bomber of this stuff you feeling it quick, don’t know how people stand in line for this stuff, i didn’t really think it was all that great with all the hype that this brew gets.
Not my style, but over all not to bad, but considering how you have to get it, and the price, i wouldn’t buy one ever.
It’s not that i don’t like this style, it’s just ok at best. . .
Edit: Woooo, this stuff is making me feel buzzy !
The flavors are getting a bit "too much" now. . .
