Commercial Description:
A hophead’s dream beer. This Imperial India Pale Ale has an opening salvo of mango, peach and citrus hop aromas that sit atop a pronounced caramel malt backbone. Although Dreadnaught is a strong and intensely hoppy ale, its complex flavors is both smooth and memorable. 9.5% ABV, 100 IBUs.

Let’s see what we have here. Nice strong citrus and pine upfront on the nose. Very balanced though I must say. I have to say I like this a tad more then Pliny, such a close call though. It has a bit more pine, hops and body with the Dreadnaught. Beyond wonderful, sweet hop aftertaste. Get this one if you can!

Thanks to bulldog04 for this bottle. Pours a slightly hazy light amber orange with a medium off-white head. Aroma of citrus hops, caramel, and honey. Taste is the same, but not quite as smooth as I would have hoped for, but overall a great brew. Aftertaste is very pleasant, but this beer just doesn’t live up to the hype.

Bottle, with a big thank you to StFun for sending me this one. Pours a clear brownish amber with a medium sized white head that actually sticks around for a while. Piles of sweet honeyed citrus hops hit the nose just on popping the bottle cap. The sweet pine and citrus is backed up with hints of honey and malt. Medium to thick body with a gentle sweetness up front into a nice malty backbone. Finishes still a little sweet, but not cloying, with a very slowly developing and long lasting grapefruit bitterness. Remarkably tasty. Nothing on it that says “Wow this is the best thing ever”, but lots of stuff that is just downright solid and hard to disagree with. Shame FFF stopped distributing to NY.

courtesy of the hink, aged 3 years, how odd, but still amazing! ... hops have held up well, and the kick is still there, the malt has intensified and has given this beer a great rounded sweetness .. aged: wonderful, fresh: we will see...

A: Copper Orange with a small head, some tiny bubbles and sticky lacing. S: A true hop bomb. Pine and Citrus waft from the glass in a big way. T: Initial sweetness followed by an explosion of the pine and grapefruit of the hops. You can taste the alcohol in this one. This is a big beer, aggressive and in your face. M: Very thick moutfeel, you can chew on this bad boy. D: I will stop at one here. It is a very straightforward example of a DIPA, but drinking more than one would put you down for the count

22 oz bottle. Ah, the final beer in my rating beer quest, and possibly my favorite of them all. Pours a hazy golden color with almost no head (white and dies quickly). Smells of so many things: hops (tons of them), malt, lots of mango, and some citrus. The only thing I’ve had so far that rivals this in smell is Bells Hopslam, though it’s close. Tastes of mango, some citrus, lighter hops than I was expecting, and a malt aftertaste. Goes down quite smoothly (as long as you can stand I-IPA’s). Really a very good beer, one of my favorites, and it would be a regular if it weren’t so difficult to find combined with the price. Makes me want to try this Russian River that is supposedly better than Dreadnaught.
