mnovacanes (48), Munster, Indiana, USA Jan 23, 2009 Updated: Apr 9, 2009Appearance: Off-white, creamy head; haze from bottle conditioning; somewhat dark reddish brown
Aroma: More malt than expected, less citrus; milky, nutty cookie from malt; orange, pine, and spruce from hops; seems like two independent components rather than unified; also possibly honey and butter.
Flavor: A tale of two flavors! Initially, almost all malt, with moderate bitterness; finish is almost all bitter hops, malt almost completely disappears; would rather see good balance throughout than two separate temporal components trevor211 (500), Seattle, Washington, USA Jan 21, 2009 Thanks to Bobby91w for including this in a very generous trade! This brew has an incredible amount of flavor. Pours an orangeish honey color, with very little head - you can easily tell how thick it is during the pour. Tons of hops, but an even stronger contingent of malts on the nose. It smells sweet - I can certainly see where they’re coming from with mango and peach, although there’s more sweet grain, like a corn-based breakfast cereal. The flavor explodes when it hits your tongue - a lash of bitter hops (and plenty of them) is held in check by the sweeter, earthier flavors. Stays clean enough with the alcohol presence (covered well) and a crisp finish, though I wish it had just a bit more carbonation - it’s a bit sticky. This really is more along the lines of a barley wine, but it is utterly delicious. nightrider (370), encinitas, California, USA Jan 20, 2009 Pour from a bomber revealed a orange golden color. Citrus of pineapple and lemon on the nose. medium body. Solid bitter hops with just a touch of malty sweetness. Alcohol well hidden. Finishes fairly dry and hoppy. Great balance and very tasty overall. ryanknock (150), San Francisco, California, USA Jan 20, 2009 Grass, pine and citrus. Caramel, toast, toffee. These are all present in massive quantities, with a slight pear ester undertone and slight warmth. Medium bodied, and mouth filling. No session ale, this should be sipped to be enjoyed. DragonsHead (137), Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 19, 2009 Delicious!! Haven’t had this one in awhile until the other night. Pours a dark orange color with tons of hop aroma. Big citrus taste follow by lots of malt. A perfect DIPA!
Pawola22 (676), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Jan 18, 2009 22oz bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy light orange body with a thin, off-white, fizzy head that dissipates quickly, but remains pretty heavily laced. Aroma is soft caramel malts and lots of grapefruit hops. I pick up a little of the mango they claim, but not really the peach. Pine needle spicy. The flavor is loaded with juicy and sweet grapefruit hops. Decent amount of balancing honeyish malts, but definitely hop dominated. Soapy feel and very piney. Palate is medium to full and dries in the finish before lingering with a lot of citrus bitterness. Overall, a well crafted DIPA. Love the sweetness and intense hoppiness with a very sessionable body. Delicious. BrewCzar (108), St Louis, Missouri, USA Jan 17, 2009 Bottle pours a cloudy orange with no head. A swirl of the glass shows the thickness of this IIPA as it clings to the glass. Aroma is hoppy yeilding citrus notes of mango and orange. The flavor is intially sweet with hints of caramel malts, peach, and pine. Finishes with a bitter hoppiness. Mouthfeel is unusally thick and coating for an IIPA. blklab2007 (938), Connecticut, USA Jan 16, 2009 Updated: Jan 17, 2009bottle from sqnfan poured into a tulip glass has a light orange amber color and a one finger white head that laced down the glass nicely. aroma has juicy pineapple, citrus hops, grapefruit, pine, and some balancing malt. like a sweet citrus grove in a bottle, yum. mouth feel is light with full frothing carbonation. flavor just explodes right out of the gate. lemon rind, grapefruit, pine, and a complementing touch of bitter hops. there is a good dose of sweetness and it finishes with a long duration of hoppyness.
