DocLock (4170), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 23, 2004 An extra special thanks to atpayne (Adam) for this one. Adam was good enough to trade me three different FFF styles for some quality PA and NY beers, and FFF has eclipsed Stone as my current favorite brewer.
I drank this one out of a Corsendonk tulip glass. It pours a turbid pumpkin pie colored (I verified, from the label, that this is bottle conditioned), with a reverse "Guinness cascade" going on...super heady, carbonation moving from bottom to top. Great lace. It's funny...I just described seeing the Taj Mahal in the lace of a previous beer, and this one has a drawing of the Taj Mahal on the label!
Aroma of HUGE pineapple, grapefruit, hops, pears, applesauce, and honeydew melon.
Tastes extremely hoppy, with hints of all the above mentioned fruits, citrus, and chardonnay.
Finishes very hoppy, fruity, citrusy, crisp, smooth, with extremely well hidden alcohol (I estimated 6-7...this doesn't taste like 9.5).
Amazingly complex...each swallow brings slightly new aromas and flavors.
As it warmed, I noticed even more complex aromas and flavors.
I gave the Stoudt's IPA a 5.0, and this one is just as deserving, for slightly different reasons. This one is hoppier, but somewhat less complex than the Stoudt's IPA, in my opinion. This one surpasses the Dogfish 90 minute IPA. I see no deductions in this one, and I want to thank atpayne again for this exceptional beer. Three Floyds beers will bend you over the table, shove complexity and hops up your ass, and make you cry mercy. Fucking OUTSTANDING!!!
thickfreakness (104), Austin, Texas, USA Oct 6, 2008 From 5/28/08. Amber gold color with fluffy white head that fades to a layer of foam for the entirety of the beer. Nice lacing.
Sweet hoppy smell. Mostly pineapple(?) then pine and citrus. Absolutely great nose.
Taste is even better. Bitter and citrus hoppy but also extremely well balanced by malt especially for an IIPA. As it warms I get more tropical fruit tastes but especially pineapple.
Syrupy and smooth.
Aside from ABV this is just extremely well balanced and drinkable. Highly recommended. bellmyer (13), EAST MOLINE, Illinois, USA Oct 6, 2008 22oz bottle from the brewery. She comes out in a nice cloudy burnt orange. Decent head fades rather quickly but carbonation keeps bubbling from the bottom. Aroma is hops hops hops and some malt. Lovely smell, there’s some fruit in there too. She tastes of hops hops hops and fresh fruit. Solid taste with a lot going on. Slight warm of alcohol finish. Lasting mouthfeel, I can still taste it. Mmm that’s good. Lacing is there but not much to talk about. Excellent brew, A+++ will drink again rederic (1444), montréal, Quebec, Canada Oct 3, 2008 Amber-orangeish color, with a fluffy white, leaving laces, candied orange peel nose with a nice apricot flowery hop accent, with some cedary, coniferous, resiny pine niddle notes and a hint of hemp leafiness in the aroma follows through on a medium-bodied palate with a yeasty, toasty malt, candied apricot, orange peel, marmalade character, than wow!! a nice flowery hop lush conefirous, cedary, resiny, pine niddle flavor, kind concentrated hoppy pallet , but well balanced with a mellow sweetness, leading towards a citrus, lemony, lime, cedary, leafy hop bitterness finish. taalhiker (111), Dayton, Ohio, USA Sep 29, 2008 From bottle. Part of April Dayton Beertasting event. Pours cloudy orange color huge head. Aroma of citrus and pine.
Tastes include juniper, cloves and grapefruit. Long lasting finish. Great effort..... paytoplay (56), , California, USA Sep 29, 2008 Impressive brew, not as aromatic or full bodied and texture, and the finish was Ok. But very complex and interesting from the 1st taste. Hops are complex, a friend said "Stone IPA", which isn’t a bad thing. Bottled seemed fresh. I have several more and look forward to trying again and again as this brew isn’t around So Cal.
