| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 10, 2007 Cloudy rust orange pour. Head recedes quickly. Oak heavy aroma. Sour mash whiskey, apricots and citrus scented hair spray. Peaches, honey, and weeds. Dirty. Flavors of tobacco, hot grapefruit juice, wet oak chips. A bold rush of green tea leaves in a firey wave of hops. And booze. Similarities to poorly rendered scotch are rampant. Powerfully earthy and woodsy like soil wet with rainwater. Hot with cayenne pepper at the finish. Slick and menacing. A hint of vegetable frying oil – the kind that coats the floor at your local fast food choice. Palate is abrasive and belligerent with boozy aggression. Not that detailed or drinkable. Mostly hype. Thanks Brian! AgentSteve (1378), SF Bay Area, California, USA

This is an outstanding brew. Flavor is a little pineapple, citrus and fruity hops, caramel, with a viscous mouthfeel that makes this such a smooth beer! This is my first 3Floyds, and I am longing for more. Great beer that lives up to the hype. JCapriotti (1378), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA

Strong flowery aroma with pine and grapefruit, something I’d like put into air freshener. Taste is strong with hops, a little off balance with malt. Some grapefruit, sweet caramel, and a bitter finish that fades into a grapefruit rind taste. I detected some kind of stale bitterness in it, but it may have been the bittering hops. Very creamy texture. Overall, I love this beer. I need to do some tests with this... fresh versus "aged" a few months. I almost think I like it better with toned down hops, though, it does lose a bit in the aroma dept I believe.

Update 3/7/2006 - Fresh batch, I presume. This beer has lost its edge. After I had it the first time, I thought it was just a touch overrated.... but still remember it as being huge. Now, its just a big IPA. Not huge, not phenomenal, just there. LaChad (1375), San Francisco, California, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Aug 31, 2003 Bottle. Light amber color, big yet quickly dissipating head. Sweet and somewhat malty for an IPA. More like a barleywine in many ways. Hints of peach and strawberry, unique for anything calling itself an IPA. Malty and somewhat dry finish. Good stuff. igneous1 (1374), Davenport, Iowa, USA
| 4.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jul 8, 2003 beautiful copper color with a hint of orange. head is slightly off-white and surprisingly thin. aroma is this absolutely incredible perfect amalgamation of the hops and malts. the caramel and toffee, and brown sugar aromas make their presence known! while the hops are an excellent mixture of grapefruit and pine resin. i even detect a slight earthy quality to the aroma. mouthfeel is very thick and oily with huge grapefruit dominating over the piney quality. extremely long somewhat mouth-numbing finish. as Hop Devil is lighter and crisper, this beer is huge without being monstrously heavy. this beer is probably even a little better than Yulesmith due to the outstanding balance (especially in the aroma) of the malt and hops. if this beer is better on tap, i just dont see how. as i have never given a 5.0 for a beer, i wont here either....that said, i dont see how this beer could be any better. ilovedarkbeer (1367), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Jan 2, 2008 Wow. Pours a thick orange color with a medium sized bubbly head. Nose is marijuana. seriously. intense hop oil aroma. Notes of pine and some grapefruit. Mouthfeel is fantastic and feels thick on the tongue. Warming finish. Tastes like a christmas tree and a bag of pot. I don’t know how else to describe it. Great beer but a bit overwhelming. pantanap (1363), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 9, 2007 Updated: Oct 25, 2008draft at brewpub....aroma: light citrus, grapefruit nose w/ sweet sugary malt that also chimes in and makes its presence....appearance: glassy golden brown topped with a medium ivory head...taste: nice pine essence with additional citrus hops playing a role as well. taste gives way to the sugary malt and then finishes off with grapefruit......very nice off the tap.
9/17/08 lot less palatable this time around on tap at the brewpub. dinish is a little too sweet and bitter which doesn’t make for a good combination. jaymobrown (1360), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Oct 22, 2002 Updated: Jul 11, 2004Had this draught and it was simply amazing. The alcohol is not even a factor, which maybe a bad factor as the last thing I remember is having this beer, then I woke up in the back of a Jeep! As with all of FFF the hops are there, and in a big way. Fruit and light with grapefruit, sugar, citrus flavors. I can't rave enough about this brewer and about this beer.
Re-rate: This isn't so much a re-rate as an addition. Had this cask-conditioned which considerably softened the palate as well as presented some more grapefruit flavors. Overall, the same flavors are present, but the soft palate I felt mellowed out the beer much more and created a much more beautiful balance.
