Drnk_McDermott (1545), Downers Grove, Illinois, USA Jul 13, 2003 Updated: Aug 12, 2004 Draft, at the brewery. It's like a trip to the emergency room because you've stuck a whole bag of hop pellets up your nose. If you thought Alpha King was getting a little too tame, this'll put you back to rights. Big citrus/grapefruit hop aroma twists your tongue while masking an insidious bunch of alky-hol. I see many people have rated this even higher than I have, in a field that inspires a lot of high-rated beers. I'll agree with everything being said here, I just find it hard to reserve my highest rating for something extra special when 3F has so much great stuff.
glennmastrange (395), hobe sound, Florida, USA Sep 3, 2008 Bottle. Heavy malt and hop aromas of roasted, caramel, pine and orange, moderate broth for the yeast, with notes of date, wine, brown sugar and vanilla. Head is small, creamy, white with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky orange/red/tan. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and acidic and moderately bittter. Palate is medium, oily and slick, and has a soft carbonation. It finishes lightly astringent and moderately alcoholic. Every aroma and flavor I like in a beer is in this DIPA. Add a thicker head to this and what you have here is a perfect beer. Now all I have to do is find a way to get this in Florida. nqualls (202), Tennessee, USA Sep 1, 2008 22 oz bottle poured into a tulip. Poured a hazy orange color with a three finger whitish head. Aroma of citrus and some sweetish malt. Flavor was well balanced with a mix of piney and citrus flavors. A faint bitterness that lingers briefly. I really liked this beer, but it isn’t as good as Hopslam. I guess the scarcity of the brew makes it better? amish_caravan (209), Winona, Minnesota, USA Aug 29, 2008 aroma of hops and citrus. very sweet scent. taste is very hoppy and has tones of fruit as well. smooth finish that lasts on the tongue and in the back of the throat. I would purchase this again. kosko20 (88), Bemidji, Minnesota, USA Aug 29, 2008 Updated: Sep 2, 2008Great brew, on draft at the brewpub. This was the beer I was looking forward to most. It disappointed some (4.3, unbelievable, I know) because I was hoping it could challenge my favorite Bell’s Hopslam. This had a great aroma of hops (pine, citrus) and also hints of malts and barley. Appearance was a very nice dark hazy orange with an off white head that started nice but faded. Flavor was strong hops of pine and citrus. Palate was great, bitter end was nice. Overall, definitely worth buying more of but not the best of the style. Beerman6686 (724), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 28, 2008 Pours a hazy orange color with a nice off white head. Aroma is of a lot of citrus hops and peaches maybe. Flavor is very abundant, nice citrus hops and some pine mixed in, and the fruit flavor in the hops really comes out. Really good stuff, but not quite up to par with Pliny or Hopslam.
