Commercial Description:
An American Wheat Beer brewed with red wheat and boat loads of amarillo hops gives this summer brew a lemony finish. The slight haze in the bottle is from the bottle-conditioning, where yeast is added to the bottle for a secondary fermentation. Gumballhead is a Skingraft Comics hero. Check out Skingraft Comics and Records at <a href=http://www.skingraftrecords.com>SkingraftRecords.com. Cheers!

On draft at the Comet. I do believe that I have found a new summertime favorite beer. A nice wheat with the patented Three Floyds twist. It poured a nice light golden color with a short lived small head. Smell is wheat, hops, and a hint of slight lemon. Taste is much the same, except with the presence of some well placed hops. Mouthfeel is smooth and refreshing, with just enough hop bitterness to it. A very crisp, well balanced beer.

Thanks to Pantanap for the bottle. Fluffy head...typical wheat body. Very pleasant aroma...has strong grapefruit scents but also a lot of other fruits, including orange and lemon...very nice work of the amarillo hops! Nice flavor up front...hoppy, citrusy and bready, then mellows out into a mostly-lemon flavor, and actually has a somewhat watery finish on the palate. Flavor lingers long for a wheat. I’m not one that has completely bought into the FFF craze so far, but this was a very enjoyable variation of a wheat, which is nice to see today!

Update 10/31/08: On tap in NW Indiana...this is a very clean beer on tap, the amarillo hops are truly allowed to shine in this beer...lemon and orange flavors very well defined and the oscillation between strong citrus and sharp bitterness is wonderful...notching this one up slightly from previous rating

Bottled. I completely agree with the commercial description. Obviously one of the brewers and not the ad folks developed this. The amarillo hops really make this a unique and easy drinking wheat ale. By far my favourite wheat beer so far.

Darker golden with decent head / Nose of wheat, hemp, and lemon / Light body with creamy, hoppy palate and smooth finish / Flavors of lemon, pineapple, honey, and wheat. The standard for an American wheat.

22oz. Pours a translucent golden color with an airy white head that shortens quickly. Some nice lacing. Aroma is light fruit, citrus, tiny bit of hops, lemons, some candy. As it warms a small amount of wheat and cereal is present in the smell. Taste is surprisingly light with a nice touch of subtle hops. Incredibly smooth and easy to drink. A little bit more flavor would be nice. The citrusy hops is a nice touch though I crave a bit more wheat character, which I hardly detected at all. Very mild compared to Three Floyd’s other stuff. Re-rate: The bomber I had before was a year old when I drank it, I have now discovered. Drinking this fresh on tap was a completely different experience. Huge hop aroma and flavor. Very tasty. A great combo of hoppiness and drinkability. Definitely the best beer in its class.

22oz. Bomber This is one of my favorite warm weather beers and I’m finally getting around to reviewing it. So here it is. Gumballhead poured a very nice slightly hazed golden. A quarter inch white head. All kinds of carbonation bubbles along the sides of my pint glass. This beer smells great. So refreshing. There’s a tiny amount of malt but it’s mostly just citrus hops. Lemon mostly. Smells like candy. My mouth is watering and I can’t wait to drink this up. I get a mouthful of citrus right up front but is quickly balanced by by a slightly sweet wheat malt. Ends with more citrus(lemon) from the hops and the smallest amout of pine. A good bitterness lingers for a few seconds and vanishes. There’s enough hops to keep my mouth tingly until the next gulp though. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side. Just the right amount of carbonation to keep things going and move the flavors around in your mouth. Drinkability is way up there. It’s so easy going down and it keeps you wanting more with the nice hop bite. 10/15/06
