frankenkitty (1832), Oak Lawn, Illinois, USA Sep 23, 2008 Hazy golden with a nice, holding white head. Fine lace, thin film... looks like a nice Wit. Strong smoked presence off the top. Deep, roasty malts... mmmmm. Surprisingly light-bodied with a full roasted malt flavor and a sharp, herbal bitter finish. Low alcohol notes detract, but not enough for me to stop these from coming to the table one after the other. Reminded me of a young Schlenkerla Helles. ((((((Since my traditional html references no longer work, I will simply mention that I had this on tap at Three Floyds last month.)))))) And I am truly disappointed that I cannot use common punctuation and quotations (even LINE BREAKS) without having them dismembered into ampersands and gibberish.
Cornfield (4409), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Sep 3, 2008 This poured a rich golden body with a modest white head. It had an aroma of Virginia smoked ham without the saltiness. Smooth creamy texture. The smoke wasn’t overpowering in the flavore and allowed a pale malt sweetness to come through. Served too cold, the smoke intensified nicely as the beer warmed. Not a bad attempt at a Bamberger lager.

Three Floyds Brewing Company and Brewpub, Munster, IN
acrdz (4486), Boulder, Colorado, USA Aug 26, 2008 Draft at the brewery. Hazed golden colored body with a small white head. Extremely fresh and smooth first impression, creamy body, nicely subtle smoke note, some rich cracker malts, low hop presence, wonderfully clean and simple, and remarkably close to what true smoked helles tastes, smells and looks like. There’s some small notes of wet corn, but otherwise this is a really solid beer and a wonderful surprise from Three Floyds. pnista (905), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Aug 11, 2008 On tap at FFF. Pours a very lightly hazed faded golden yellow with a thin white head. The nose is big smoke, akin to bacon, but much more like lox. Some floral to peppery hops in the backdrop over subtle malt. Light refreshing body, with average carbonation. Tastes like grainy lox. There’s some very light malt, drier. But the graininess brings this down a touch. Too bad I love smoke! Fun beer, glad to have had it. HonkeyBra (509), Lemont, Illinois, USA Aug 8, 2008 Grabbed a pint at the Hop Leaf. Three floyds brewed a lager that that tastes like bacon. I mean that in a good way, like, in a holy crap they can do anything way. They take a style I would probably have never given a second thought and made into a beer I’ll probably never forget.
