Color is a very dark amber with brown highlights. Aroma is very malty, sweet, a bit roasty, a hint of peat, caramel, toffee, and nice. Flavor’s about the same. Perhaps with a touch more peat. Body is perhaps very slightly thin and good carbonation. Finish is pleasing; with a tad bit o’ booze. Nice drinking beer. Seems like it’s tamer than it used to be.

Delicious. phaleslu (567), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Dec 18, 2009 12 oz. bottle from City-Wide in South Bend. Pours a dark ruby-brown color with a small tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of raisins, brown sugar, caramel, fig, and malts. Flavor follows suit well, with notes of all of the above, as well as wood and roast. Sweet and smooth, with a syrupy mouthfeel and medium body. Really nice. donbusa (11), Jefferson, Wisconsin, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 15, 2009 Bottle, last of 36 beers I picked up at the brewpub in September. Not much head to speak of, but I can’t remember if that’s consistent with how it’s been. Dried fruit aroma - prunes, raisins, dates - chocolate, cherries, coffee. Flavor more of the same - this is definitely mellowed, but I’ll rate the beer I’m having, not the beer I think it is. Pleasant bitterness overwashed by a powerful sweetness going down. Bit of cola, bit of barleywine. ericyyz (12), three bridges, New Jersey, USA
| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Dec 10, 2009 An absolute symphony of malts, wrapped in a beautiful deep red color and creamy mouthfeel. My brain can’t even fathom all the malt complexity - roasted notes, chocolaty notes, dark fruit and maybe some peated malt. Just incredible. Beardface (1036), Eugene, Oregon, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 9, 2009 3 bottles acquired via trade. Poured out a medium brown with a light tan head and minimal lacing. Aroma was roasted malts, chocolate, peat and caramel. Flavor was primarily smoke, peat and caramel with a smidge of chocolate and some light pine hops. Pretty good example of this style. Rciesla (3810), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA
