Commercial Description:
The Dutch champion of beer tasting, Sjak van Peer, won the prize of creating the Dutch ABT beer of the month. As he is a great fan of Westmalle Dubbel, he wanted this beer to have a good balance between bitter and sweet. And because he likes the beer to be strong, the alcohol percentage was supposed to be about 8%. As he also wanted a cool name for his beer, he named the beer after himself: ’Toffe Peer’, which means something like ’cool dude’.

(03/2007. Draft. t’Arendsnest). Malty sweet nose. Quite sweet, indeed, leaving sugar on the lips, though surprisingly, I didn’t get any hints of pear! Murky amber. Quite tasty ... warming and inviting ... very mellow and soft. Improves as it warms, but approaches an almost cloying character, which fortunately is counteracted by a medium-light body (also surprising given the heavy sweetness).

Tap, Café Morshuis Albergen. Large glass for € 2,-. Indeed, pear in the flavor. Poire Williams liquor even. Also in the aroma, especially when the beer (that is served quite cold) warmens up. Caramel. Rahter sweet and just below medium bodied. Just a touch of alochol. Easy drinker with just enough character to be pleasurable, but somehow I expected better.

On tap at Arendsnest. Good for van Peer that he won the competition. This is quite sweet. Caramel flavour and tangy. Sugary-orange notes.

ABT beer of the month, febr 07, Tap at Ledig Erf, together with caesar. Caramel malty with fruity notes. Pretty sweet. Enjoyable, but half-way the sweetness becomes a bit annoying.

ABT beer of the month, febr 07, Tap at Ledig Erf. Clear light redbrown color, medium off-white head. Aroma is caramel malty, some cinnamon, bit fruity, candy sugar. Sweet taste of candy sugar, caramel, toffee, slightly bitter. Decent beer, but bit too sweet for me.
