Commercial Description:
This award winning doppelbock (8.2% alcohol by volume) lager is brewed with a generous supply of Munich, carapils, caramel and chocolate malts and is fermented with Bavarian lager yeast. The resulting caramel sweetness and rich mouthfeel are complimented by the mild bittering of German Hallertau hops. 1997 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal Winner

BOTMC Selection, September 2008: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Pour produced a reddish-brown body with and almost non-existent head of foam. Great caramel malt aroma. Low carbonation with a full body, and a good measure of sweetness. Alcohol is well concealed thought the hops leaves a slight bitter aftertaste on the sides of the tongue. Palate is unassuming, and aside from the sweetness of the malting and it’s overall heaviness, I don’t think that this is a complex beer. Nevertheless, I think it meets it’s commercial description rather well and a certainly a beer to warm up with on a cold day or night.

I liked this much more than most it seems. Nice sweet caramel taste. It looks great with a dark amber color and small head. Aroma is very nice malty sweetness. Nice little burn as it warms.

Please forgive the brief descriptions. Taster: aroma and flavor have a wonderful malt profile. The flavor has caramel sweetness with mild chocolate bitterness

Dug it. Very sweet nose made me dread the taste, but a good hop profile keeps this sweet but not too much. Hell, I think it’s pretty damn delicious.

Pours dark brown with a slight red hue, almost no head, and the small amount that there is dissipates immediately. Aroma is weaker than I anticipated, sweet and malty as expected. Flavor is fairly one-dimensional, sweet caramel with a touch of hops. Body is smooth and pretty rich, the alcohol is well hidden, lightly carbonated. Not a bad beer, but it certainly shows how far the American craft beer industry has come since its 1997 medal.

Funny my mother in law would give me a beer called Butt Head. Amber body with off white head. Nutty and maple syrup aroma. Flavor was not as sweet as most dopplebocks which was good for me. Sweetness of the style lingers on the palate. Decent session brew.

Bottle at GBBF08. Rough hop aroma. Caramelly flavour, distinct hops. A little sweet, but quite alcoholic. Burns my throat a bit.

Just mildly impressed with this beer. Pours a deep amber with a nice head. A mostly malty aroma. Some rich malty flavors and hints of fruity, specifically cherry. Very little hop character with this beer. Overall, an underwhelming beer but good none-the-less.
