Commercial Description:
This award winning doppelbock (8.2% alcohol by volume) lager is brewed with a generous supply of Munich, carapils, caramel and chocolate malts and is fermented with Bavarian lager yeast. The resulting caramel sweetness and rich mouthfeel are complimented by the mild bittering of German Hallertau hops. 1997 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal Winner

Reddish maroon brown pour with a really weak flash in the pan head. Smell is malty with a light almost sour fruit, metallic, and alcohol kick to it. Taste is predominantly alcoholic malt, and is rather uneventful. Not very good, or worth getting in my opinion. I’d rather not taste the alcohol and just have two bocks instead.

dark red amber with a thin head....aroma of sweet malt...thick caramel taste with a lingering finish of wet paper....this was part of a sampler 12 pack (4 different beers)...this was hands down the best of the bunch, but I wouldn’t buy it again

Dark amber with light head / Sweet, thin malt nose / Light body with short finish / Very sweet, somewhat cloying caramel and coffee flavors.

Very similiar lable image and name to Leinys bigbutt dopplebock. Nothing really impressive. Pours a caramel reddish color with a small acidic head. Tastes of carmel and malt with a hint of hops. Just decent.

Dark amber with a brief white head. I usually don’t like doppelbocks, and I like this one so I assume it isn’t good according to the style, but hey, I like it. The flavor is really malty with an underlying fruitiness that must come from the yeast. The dominant flavor is a toasty caramel with some other sweetness. Medium mouthfeel and a sticky finish.

Bottle (12oz). Last soldier from their mixed six-pack - been pretty lame so far. Clear bubbly ruby, small head. Light resin, very sweet malt, mildly boozy, lots of cherry and other fruit. Pretty decent - fruit, sweet light roast malt, herbal hops and alcohol all mingle sociably. Thin body, nicely astringent, only lightly carbonated, nice boozy finish that stays in check - decent doppel, a little thin and sweet, but the only beer here of six I might go for again.

Molasses aroma. Muddy light to medium brown color, no head. Powdery mouthfeel, extremely yeasty taste. Yeast finish. I’m convinced this was just a horribly bad bottle. I want a do-over because this was absolutely disgusting. After checking the date, the beer is an entire year past its expiration! I’ll try again and rerate, but be advised this beer apparently doesn’t keep well at all.!

Bottle says drink within 4 months of 10/06, which means 02/07, and I didn’t notice until I was at home with this sixer of it in late 05/07! Still, assuming 10/06 was the bottling date, I’d figure an 8.2% doppelbock could withstand 7-8 months. I suppose it did, but for the oxidation. Poured a lightly hazy reddish amber color with a small layer of foam. Aroma was strongly melanoidiny with that weird grape jolly rancher character I get in many doppelbocks. Rich and bready, with a leafy and earthy hop character to complement it. The flavor much the same but for some mild layers of sherry and cardboard. The beer wasn’t bad because of this, in fact it added some interesting complexity and made the beer feel old (in a good way). However, I’m sure this beer might be really nice fresh, full of rich, clean munich malts. Will revisit again upon next release.
