Commercial Description:
This award winning doppelbock (8.2% alcohol by volume) lager is brewed with a generous supply of Munich, carapils, caramel and chocolate malts and is fermented with Bavarian lager yeast. The resulting caramel sweetness and rich mouthfeel are complimented by the mild bittering of German Hallertau hops. 1997 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal Winner

Does some nice things, but the alcohol is too present. They need to be a little more inventive. More of a barleywine to my tongue. Nose is the best part, shows promise with a nutty, fruity aroma.

Bottle: The sound of the beer fizzing distracted me from the aroma but the flavor brought me back. The alcohol is ever present but when is it not with a doppelbock. A fine beer.

Bottled. Poured a clear copper with a short cap of caramel head. Nose was full of rich chocolatey and fruits malts, toasted nuttiness, and alcohol... quite nice. Alcohol was too strong a player in the flavor, though... getting in the way of some of those rich malts (caramel, chocolate, and dark fruit)... nice autumny leafy hop presence. A bit syrupy on the palate (not in a bad way)... but alcohol makes itself too well-known. OK overall.

Darker brown, pretty clear, also has a reddish tinge to it. Moderate carbonation with a thin offwhite veil. Aroma is inviting - slightly sweet, roasted caramel malt, aged dark fruits like plum and cherries. Flavor is a bit sweet, alcohol is warming, and the overall taste is like the aroma, but a little weaker except for the malt part. The finish is astringent and metallic, but seems to be improving as the beer warms up. Mouthfeel is average, but has some chewiness to it. Much better than all the other Tommyknocker brews, although I still have the Maple Nut Brown and Imperial Nut Brown to go. 12 oz bottle (best before 9/18/2006), $1.10 (out of a mixed 12-pack) from The Party Source.

Clear, dark red/brown with nearly no head retention. Nice, tangy nose with some caramel, chocolate, and some grassy hops. Fairly sweet, some dark chocolate notes, slight metallic twang, fairly bitter finish, and notable alcohol. Not a round enough mouthfeel for a doppelbock, but not unpleasant on its own merits.

Dark brown with red/orange around the edges. Sweet aroma with some malt and vegatable. Malty, yeasty flavor. Somewhat creamy mouthfeel. The fruit notes I expect from a bock come out eventually... plum/date/ cherry. Fruity finish. Not really much alcohol evident. It’s ok.

Borwn, with a reddish tint. Thin beige head. Nice malt nose - toast, cereal, plus some caramel. More carbonated than I expected, and too watery as well. Rye bread and some vague sweet flavors. Not much to this one.
