Commercial Description:
This award winning doppelbock (8.2% alcohol by volume) lager is brewed with a generous supply of Munich, carapils, caramel and chocolate malts and is fermented with Bavarian lager yeast. The resulting caramel sweetness and rich mouthfeel are complimented by the mild bittering of German Hallertau hops. 1997 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal Winner

Saw a few of these pop up at the store over near Lantana and Lakeworth. Pours amber reddish-brown with a small, offwhite head. Some lacing. Nose hints to how sweet this brew is gonna be. candy and some clove. Taste is sweet caramel, clove, licorice. Alchohol hangs in there, but doesnt burn you out like a 5 alarm chili. Malty and some here and there hoppyness to it. Very decent brew and highly enjoyable. On the Doppelbock realm however, it’s kinda artificial.

I was somewhat disappointed with this beer after having a moderately good opinion of their maple beer. I found this beer to be flat and overly sweet. Compared to German dopples this just doesn’t stand up. I wish American micros wouldn’t try too hard to be different. Different is not always better. I think I’ll go get an Celebrator to wash out the taste.

Draught at Tyler’s in Durham, NC. Clear garnet color with khaki head. Smells of caramel, dried fruits, and alcohol. Flavors are similar, but there are also hints anise and bourbon. Slick, oily, and a bit sweet. Low carbonation. Not a big fan of doppelbocks, in general, so don’t take my rating to heart if you’re a fan of the style.

Clear, reddish brown appearance with a thin, white head and scant lacing. Sweet, caramel malt aroma , along with some licorice, some soft fruit. Medium bodied with modest carbonation. Smooth taste with toffee, caramel and a hint of cherry. Finished sweet, but not cloying, with a noticable alcohol kick.

Very little smell to the beer mostly malts. The head does not last for long and is an off white color. The beer itself is dark ruby red, and very clear. It holds rich tastes of malt, caramel and a slight hint of chocolate. The palate is fairly full and supple. it is a good beer, the alcohol is subdued yet present. Not in the same leage as Celebrator or Aventinus but decent I can not complain. Thanks Robertsreality.

Not the best dopplebock, but I’m generally a fan of this style so I ejoyed it. Nose was thick and malty with hints of licorice. Great velvety mouthfeel but has some strange burnt caramel off flavors.

Very nice doppelbock. Mix of chocolate and caramel blend to make the best beer I tasted from the Tommyknocker Brewery.

Translucent brown pour with thin head. The aroma is sweet with a tartness on the side that is probably the alcohol. The flavor starts sweet - malts and caramel - and stays sweet throughout giving an impression of plum and an aftertaste of overripe banana. Yet there are hints of roasted malts and a bit of spice. And a slight bitter hop taste at the end. The alcohol is also evident in the finish. Thin body and moderate carbonation. If Celebrator is the standard for this style, then Butt Head is below that in balance and complexity. Still an above average beer.
