Commercial Description:
This award winning doppelbock (8.2% alcohol by volume) lager is brewed with a generous supply of Munich, carapils, caramel and chocolate malts and is fermented with Bavarian lager yeast. The resulting caramel sweetness and rich mouthfeel are complimented by the mild bittering of German Hallertau hops. 1997 Great American Beer Festival Silver Medal Winner

Bottle. Dark red and brown with a small head. Aromas are weetabix malts with toffee. Softly spicy with vinous notes. Flavours are malty and vinous with citrus. OK.

Bottle. Poured an earthy brown pour with a small head. Very sweet aroma of dark fruit, chocolate and mild hops. Taste was lot sof sweet dark fruit with some stale hops in the background. Not great.

Muddy brown pour with a small tan head. Lots of sweet, syrupy dark fruit aroma with some faint brandy, cocoa, and banana esters. Malt dominant flavor with plentiful dark fruit, bread, spice, and a bit of an off-putting vegetal finish. Oily-medium full body. The bad vegetal finish ruins this beer for me when it could have been much better. Judging from some of the other reviews though it may simply be a bad bottle.

Pours an opaque purplish brown with small light tan head and small floaties. Aroma is light raisin and plum and a malty sweetness. Flavor is hugely malty and improves greatly as it warms. Terrific medium-full velvety body.

courtesy of gillard. Pours copper with beige head. Aroma of oak without the usual Tommy Knocker maple flavors. Taste is fruity (banana bread) with spices (almost peppery) and oak. Mouthfeel and after taste have this lingering spiciness.

Nice chocolate head and quick carbonation release. Lots of nice malt and near fruit flavors. Hops were not only minor, but virtually non-existant, and the malt was overly sweet. Don’t know if I had a bad batch or if I’ve been away from a real malt heavy beer too long. I can only drink one of these in a sitting.
