| 2.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Jan 12, 2008 Aroma is a sour scent with mild roasted tones in the back. Color is a near black amber with low carbonation and almost no head, just a ring of tiny bubbles around the edge. Taste is sweet and thick. Starting with a full body it goes down with a heavy feel. Finish is a big rich sweet bite that is backed by a sudden bitterness. In the after taste a roasted flavor comes out for just a moment. Its just seems a bit unbalanced, the sweet bites to much, the bitter is it quick to make up for it and then the only sign of roasted malt comes in late and to briefly. Its not bad but not a brew I will get again. ehhdayton (1115), USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 1, 2008 Pours very dark brown, with some red highlights. Head is good, but fades a bit fast. Aroma is subtle maple and dark fruits (raisins and figs). Flavor follows through with a pleasing subtle maple character, some sweet malt and dark fruit. Alcohol is apparent but not strong or overpowering. Very smooth beer. Aftertaste is slightly warming, leaving maple notes on the tongue. Nice beer. vyvvy (2068), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 29, 2007 Pours very dark mahogany with a pillowy tan head. The aroma has cream, root beer, toasty sweet nutty malt and brown sugar. Full body with minor carbonation. The flavor starts out with medicinal sweetness, dark malt, hazelnut and cocoa. The finish is a bit warm from the alcohol and there is a bit more medicinalness. This is a fair beer, but probably the best from the brewery. AllAboutStout (605), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 27, 2007 Pours a murky brown in color. There is no head to speak of on the pour. Smell is dark malts, some chocolate. Taste is pretty decent. More chocolate comes through and you can taste a hint of the maple syrup. Creamy and smooth on the mouthfeel. I got no hint of the hops, which I prefer. Not a bad beer. Gregis (1136), Shawnee, Kansas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 12, 2007 Sampled at the Power Plant Strong Ale Festival 12/8/07. Pours a deep reddish brown with a creamy tan head and patchy lace. The nose is big and malty with notes of nuts and brown sugar. A faint, earthy hop note hides in the background. Medium-bodied and silky-soft with a roasted, lightly bitter finish, the flavor is of nutty cocoa and brown sugar with a light hop bite at the end. This is a tasty brew and one that I’d definitely drink again. Speedle (262), Mid-Atlantic (Tour 2007-2008), Virginia, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Dec 9, 2007 12oz bottle. Served @ 51.5° in my English pint glass. Aroma is milk chocolate, light maple syrup, a slight lactic tang, nutty, with a backing of mildly earthy hops. Dark brown with red tints and a small oatmeal colored head. A good amount of lacing is present. Initial taste is milk chocolate, cocoa, sweet malt, slightly nutty followed by dark chocolate and coffee and a light fruitiness, which is almost red-wine like. Nice balance at the end with just a touch of lingering malty sweetness, light roast, and chocolate. I would never guess at the high ABV. A good example of a big American brown.
