Commercial Description:
A delicate amount of Maple syrup is added to each barrel of our award winning Maple Nut Brown Ale to impart roasted sweetness. This addition balances the nut flavor produced by Munich caramel and chocolate malts used in the brewhouse, producing a drinkable dark amber ale with a relatively low alcohol content. 2000 World Beer Cup Gold Medal & 1996 Great American Beer Festival Bronze Medal Winner

Bottle. Mild coffee smell for the malt, light herbs for the hops, very light earth for the yeast, with a hint of brown sugar. Head is small, between frothy and fizzy, slightly off white, with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear dark brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, and finishes lightly sweet. Palate is medium, watery maybe a little syrupy and has a lively carbonation. A good Brown Ale, but an artificial sweetness took away for it’s overall score a bit.

Bottle from Uncle Sudsy’s. Light sweet nutty character in the nose, with mild metallic tang, muted hop bitterness and a bit of soapy maple syrup. Dark rootbeer brown clear with thin off-white foamy head. Medium watery body with medium carbonation. Starts sweet with brown sugar, caramel malt, syrup (though I wouldn’t say maple) and a nutty dark roast taste. Overly sweet throughout with not much hops to balance it out. The majority of the bitterness is metallic and has a light tang to it. Sweet after, short of cloying, with no depth. Just an overly sweet brown ale with little bittering. Blah.

I’ve had the maple nut brown before and didn’t like it as much as I did this time. It’s smooth, with a nutiness that is complimented by brown-sugar-esque malt flavors, if that makes any sense. The hop profile is just there for balance, which it achieves.

Bottle: Poured a dark amber. The aroma was sweet malts with hints of maple. The flavor was also very sweet with hints of maple. Overall, just like all the rest to Tommy’s beers, overly sweet for the style, but easily drinkable.
