Commercial Description:
A delicate amount of Maple syrup is added to each barrel of our award winning Maple Nut Brown Ale to impart roasted sweetness. This addition balances the nut flavor produced by Munich caramel and chocolate malts used in the brewhouse, producing a drinkable dark amber ale with a relatively low alcohol content. 2000 World Beer Cup Gold Medal & 1996 Great American Beer Festival Bronze Medal Winner

12 oz bottle. Pours very clear with a maple color and light white head. Very nutty aroma with phony maple flavoring hints and too much wood. The flavor is no better with malty maple syrup and nuttiness. Unfortunately the overall flavor is riddled with a plastic like taste. Blaa. Watery body with a hint of creaminess. The overall combination of aroma, flavor, and body is in no way good. I could barely choke it down.

Bottle. Overly sweet, metallic scent. Pretty brownish red, thin head. Sour and thin, disgusting. I keep thinking these Tommyknocker’s have gone bad, but I can’t imagine it’s this consistent.

second varietal from this brewer that i have opened in the same weekend...same acetal aroma and not alot of what was supposed to be there...flavor is slightly tart due to the first signs of an infection and the head on the pour was a little overly effervescant and foamy. the date on the bottle was Oct 2006, and they recommend drinking it within 4 months, so by that rational, i am only a couple weeks outside their window...not that i am any kind of expert, but i hope they check into their bottling situation at Tommyknocker and refine their sterilization a bit. 2 beers i was very much looking forward to....2 disappointing results.

Not bad if you like flavored beers: maple is evident with chocolate notes. Of course, flavored beers are totally ridiculous.

Dark brown pour with a very sweet, almost sour smell. Perhaps a bad bottle? Sweet taste with a little tartness. No maple what so ever.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown with a white head. I get no maple aroma out of this at all. This beer has a big sweetness, but the thin watery body cannot support the sugar. A fairly boring brown ale.

A pretty good beer. Pours a dark but clear brown with little head. A nice aroma, nutty and a little sweet. Not much carbonation on the palate. Very smooth with a sweet aftertaste. Quite drinkable.

It is hard to tell what this beer looks like, what with I was drinking it out of a brown bottle. However, it does have an interesting smell, more like maple syrup than beer. Fortunately, the maple flavor does not overwhelm the ale taste; in fact, there is just a whisper of maple. The ale flavor is strong and without bitterness, and it feels very smooth. Not outstanding, but very drinkable.
