| 2.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 2/5 | 9/20 | Mar 12, 2009 Deep copper brown that is nearly garnet when held to light. A thin lightly off white barely present head. This smells like a bad bubblegum smelling doppelbock with a nasty cheap bourbon dumped in for a depth charge. There is the expected wood and vanilla, but it does not come through in a good way. The taste has some abc gum and a nasty rotting wood taste. There is also some vanilla. Bleh, a nasty, sweet base beer with yucky wood. Vanilla is there, but again, it just doesn’t seem to jibe with anything else in the brew. watson1977 (267), , Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 11, 2009 pours a nice brown-ruby color with a thick and creamy light tan head. retention and lacing are very nice. sweet aroma display some vanilla and bourbon and lightly toasted caramel. flavor also has some light vanilla and roasty caramel with light and subtle spicy hops. mouthfeel is a bit thin but no too bad and the finish is dry and warming...touch of oak at the end. pretty nice doppelbock! miketd (679), Cleveland, Ohio, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 20, 2009 Bottle from BlackForestCO. Thanks man. Pours brown, auburn hues. Small off white head. Aroma has some malt sweetness but there is definite oak and some smoke. Flavor is slightly bitter/smokey at first but moves to the sweet side on the finish. Pretty interesting beer. Decent body and easy to drink. emacgee (1872), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 16, 2009 Pours a translucent copper brown with a one finger frothy tan head. The nose is oaky, vanillins, wood shows through, some sweetness, mild peaty character, a little smoky. The flavor is pretty oaky upfront, vanillins and tannins show well too, some malt sweetness, peaty, smoky, mild alcohol. Palate is a tad thin and lacks carbonation, some tannic feel from the oak. Much better than I expected it to be. BrotherGrendel (587), San Diego, California, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 4/5 | 10/20 | Feb 8, 2009 A- Murky amber hue, minimal head, no lacing
S- Roasty and caramel malts, molasses, licorice, mild alcohol
T- Initial taste is caramel malts and cloyingly sweet molasses, slight bitterness, dark fruits and bananas, warming alcohol in the finish
M- Full-bodied, chewy texture, moderate carbonation
D- Plain to average doppelbock with moderate malt flavoring, nothing exciting here, I would pass in the future dchmela (1437), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 28, 2009 Pours a dark red brown with a thin off white head. Nice smoked malt aroma, not overpowering, but not weak. Nice meaty aroma with hints of oak vanilla. Taste is smooth with lots of nice dark malts, dark fruit, oak, vanilla and caramel. Really nice and complex. Finishes with just a touch of smoke. Solid brew. dalekliz (546), San Diego, California, USA

Similar taste of burnt toasted malt, molasses, dark fruits, oak, spices, and citrus. Lingering malt flavors. | 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 24, 2009 12 oz bottle. A pretty clear light amber pour with a quickly dissappating whitish head. Just a hint of lacing as it goes, but a bit light bodied. Not overly impressive smells of some sweet malt, brown sugar light red fruits. Tastes quite similarly, but a bit understated and watery. Alchohol is well hidden. Finishes...blah. Probably pretty drinkable, but I don’t think I would intentionally drink a whole lot of this. You could find similar for less $. The regular seems quite a bit better, did they really barrel age this one?? Not bad and worth trying but at the same time, just not that impressive.
