badgerben (3040), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Dec 16, 2004 Cask. Barkeep says this is the porter before they add the coffee (Black Snow), chocolate (Chocolate Porter), or whatever else. It sounds like this beer has changed since BitterPoet and JK have had it, as I can not believe this would be the same beer. Then again, a cask can do wonderous things for a beer. The cascading waterfall of brown and black dances down the side of the glass in a magical fashion. I could just cry... A thick and creamy, tan head sits on top. Something about their cask conditioning tends to leave a cherry hint in the beer. I’m not complaining; it smells Divine. Small bits of sweet malt as well. The taste is everything you could want in a porter: a bit of roasted chocolate and malt, coffee, and that dark fruit/cherry again. The mouthfeel is just insane... no beer should be physically able to be so smooth and creamy; it’s a sin. The best feature of this beer, I believe, is being subdued. It’s not necessarily subtle, but the flavors do not unleash a harsh attack on your palate. Absolutely outstanding!
undsioux7 (472), Cologne, Minnesota, USA Nov 14, 2007 Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Slight aromas of chocalate, sweet roasted grain. Light taste of the same with a touch of coffee, with a touch of astringency. A little light and watery on the pallete, but ok overall. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Mar 14, 2007 Growler: pours a steady brown to settle nearly black and stays black. A very tawny deep chestnut can be detected up to a strong light. Capping is medium in stature with a nice sandy brown evenly foamed froth. Eventually slips away to a ghostly skim and a thin collar. Some spotty lace with a few tiny strands are flung about and sticking to the glass.
Aroma is light and sweet with a fair amount of cocoa and a smidgeon of roasted malt and a tiny note of grain husk dryness.
Flavors are mild and set in tone with a moderate base of easy going, smooth cocoa sweetness. Touches a bit of roasted malt and a sliver of coffee noting the finish as it flecks at the hint of char and burnt toast even later.
Light to medium body, smooth and fairly slick with a budge just past the middle area bringing in a brief build up on the palate as it tenderizes the flavors a bit and floats off the finish with a ever so faint and lovely cocoa dryness.
A pretty decent porter. A subtle delight of a beer. Perhaps not a stand out in impactful punch in flavor as some of the other mighty brews that have graced the taps of Town Hall. But if you don’t mind a simple, subtle little sit down porter. This will suit you just fine. robertsreality (2462), Minnesota, USA Mar 8, 2007 Dark Brown with Red Hues and Tan Head. Subtle Malt Aroma. Sweet Malt...Followed by a Toasted Nutty Flavor and Dry Aftertate. Starts off Sweet and Thin Bodied...Nutty Flavors Come Out and Leave with a Dry Finish. IPAndy (119), minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 2, 2007 Dark brown with quarter inch head. Aroma is chocolate, which comes out immediately in the flavor, too. Some hazelnut like flavor as well, with a slightly tart, well balanced finish. I wish the alcohol was 1% lower, I’d drink five or six of them at a time. I think there are some people rating different beers here from a couple of years ago. Stine (1320), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Feb 25, 2007 Deep but transparent woody brown with some tan head. Thick smoky coffee aroma with vanilla. Marginal lactose sweetness with hints of smoked meat, but mostly bland. Inoffensive, uninspiring.
