detroiter (957), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA Feb 16, 2007 Pours a nice deep copper color, topped by a light tan rocky head of foam. Even after waiting for the foam to drop down, it remains nice and thick and clumpy. This beer leaves lacing before I even take a sip. Strong freshly-cut spruce and peppery citrus hop aroma. I get a bit of bready yeast in the aroma as well, though accidentally sticking my nose in the foam may have something to do with that.
The flavor is very hoppy, with fresh green pine and a grapefruit citrus flavor. Caramel malt is behind these, trying but not succeeding to achieve some balance. Screw balance, this is fantastic stuff as is. Medium body, fully but softly carbonated. Lingering grapefruit rind in the aftertaste.
riversideAK (1648), Shoreline, Washington, USA Mar 20, 2008 Growler from Stine! Thanks dude. A great aroma that is a mixture of fresh grapefruit, pine trees, herb (weed) and bready malt. Pours a golden amber color with a lasting thin head and awesome lace. Straight bitter hops up front with a great balance of caramel and bread. Flavors of grapefruit, pine and pepper are present and create a long lingering dry finish that seem to last forever. Full of flavor, yet amazingly easy to drink. This stuff is great. BDR (1903), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Mar 9, 2008 A spectacularly hopped beer with plenty of floral character (or perhaps I’ve just been underwhelmed with the IPAs I’ve been trying lately). `orange colored body with faint head. A strong citrus hop flavor with a faint bitter finish. Syd (737), Twin Cities Metro, Minnesota, USA Feb 28, 2008 At Town Hall right now on 2/28/2008. Pint pours slightly haze amber gold with a small head and nice lace. Aroma is sweet, floral, and fresh hops. The flavor has a good hop show and a nice malt backbone. Nice and fairly rich. Good. argo0 (6230), Washington DC, USA Feb 20, 2008 (growler, thanks Schutzenliesel) Clear amber body atop medium off-white head. Aroma is medium sweet, grapefruit, light pineapple, peach, caramel. Taste is mild sweet, grapefruit/pine, some grassy. Dry finish. Light-medium body, some acidity. acrdz (4376), Boulder, Colorado, USA Feb 20, 2008 Near crystal clear orange honey colored body. Weed-like stenchy (almost moldy) nose of twigs, pine needles, dry, fresh cut pine wood, and dry, grassy simcoe hops. Pineapple? Not so much, but I actually don’t get any pineapple in the Weyerbacher Double Simcoe either. Fresh, vibrant evergreen needles and dry, parched, crusty sap round this one out. A really solid, very hoppy pale ale that smells like an IPA. I don’t think it really deserves to be this high up on the APA list, but it’s still a solid pale ale for sure.
