detroiter (957), Euphoria, Minnesota, USA Feb 16, 2007 Pours a nearly black color, with a good inch of dark tan foam when it gets to the table. Very nice lacing throughout the pint. Throughout the second one too - heh! Definite smoke in the aroma, pleasant. Not Schlenkerla-like in the aroma department by any means, but still noticeably nice.
With the first sip, the smoke came right through - mild but tasty. Subsequent sips revealed a very nice porter, lots of chocolate and coffee flavor, with a mild hop presence. More mild smoke in the aftertaste. Smooth beer - the body is not quite medium and softly carbonated. Good idea to release it on cask.
robertsreality (2462), Minnesota, USA Sep 23, 2007 Very Dark Brown with Sandy Head. Coffee Roasts and Smokey Notes with an Overall Burnt, Dry Aroma. Malty Beer All Around with a Dominant Flavor Profile of Smoke. Coffee Roast Notes Help Keep it in Check. Medium Bodied Porter. Overall a Very Solid Smoked Porter. jazz88 (2202), San Francisco, California, USA Dec 22, 2006 Tap on 10/28/2005 (rating from notes). Black color with a cask rich brown head. A strong smoked aroma with a smooth BBQ chicken flavors. Smooth and light. Nuffield (2536), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Oct 31, 2005 Very dark brown with ruby tints, generous and nice dense head. An aroma of salami and smoke, and flavor notes of a deep cherry glaze on a roast ham with a crackling top from the oven, some suggestion of Juicy Fruit chewing gum, a little chocolate bitterness. I had it from the cask, hand-pulled, so it had a very soft palate, light like whipping cream. Quite good. (cask at brewpub) JK (2392), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA Sep 7, 2005 I only picked up minimal smoke aroma and flavor from the cask version. Black, with a thick tan head. Fairly heavy body. Somewhat sweet. A good attempt but it seems they didn’t care to see it through to make a first rate beer.
