jake65 (1216), Meridian, Idaho, USA Jul 4, 2008 Bottle: Murky, middleweight brown pour with a large, foamy tan head. Thick lacing. Roasty and bittersweet cocoa aroma with hoppy hints up front. Taste maintains the good hop presence with a chocolate and malty smooth finish. I like the crisp hoppy, yet smooth chocolately finish here. Nice little hoppy porter.
41cubs (17), , New Jersey, USA Aug 17, 2008 First off, I’m a fan of Troegs overall. This beer though, is confused. It pours and has the mouth feel of a finely crafted, carefully designed rich porter. It smells and taste far to boldly toward the hoppy side of the spectrum. Completely missing all the malty, cakey, caramel, mild roast goodness that a porter ought to be, this is a bad beer from a good brewer. Sorry Troegs. mwelsh13 (124), Maryland, USA Aug 17, 2008 Deep brown pour with a great chocolatey aroma. Little bitterness balances nicely. Good porter. wetherel (977), Carlsbad, California, USA Aug 10, 2008 Bonus bottle from TheRealBastard. Thanks! Pours with a quickly fadin small bubble tan head over a dark brown liquid. Some hops, lightly roasted malts and chocolate in the aroma. I’m expecting a little dry sourness in the taste from the aroma. Let’s see. Yep. Why can I smell impending dryness? Does sugar have a smell? Lots of early boil hop bitterness. A little to roasty. A little more toward the stout side than the porter side, my unskilled palate tells me. I have a big sweet tooth, and thus my rating is a lower than others. alexanderj (1218), San Diego, California, USA Aug 9, 2008 Bottle; poured a lighter than expected cola brown with not much off white head. Aroma was nice and sweet; oats, caramel, roasted malt, chocolate with some earthy hops. Begins with some roasted malt and caramel, than some chocolate; gives way to some roasted bitterness in the finish. Flavor diminished in quality the more I drank, which was surprising. Some chalkiness also emerged. An average beer for me. beautifulmess (4), Hackettstown, New Jersey, USA does not count Aug 7, 2008 I’m drinking year old Porter and it is slamming. Complex and hard to describe. Unique. Licorice meets vanilla coffe bean.
