Beerlando (1352), Orlando, Florida, USA May 1, 2008 Pours a dark chocolate brown color that shines slightly translucent on the edges. A dense, spongy, beige colored head settles slowly to a thin rim, leaving sticky rings of lacing behind. The nose is very fruity for an imperial stout. Caramel, figs, raisons, chocolate, and cream are well blended, but show more like a big weizen bock than an impy stout. Flavors are pretty much the same, but turning a bit more roasty and stout-like. Caramel plays a huge role, lending its luxurious sweetness to bitter chocolate, candied dark fruits, and bitter earthy hops. Roasty coffee and creamy chocolate join forces to create a mocha feel. The body is thick, almost full, and very creamy. It does finish with a good deal of alcoholic heat, however. A dry roastiness lingers on the palate. Throwing stylistic ideals out the window, this is a very solid brew. It definitely resembles a huge, malty, roasty weizen bock more than an imperial stout, however.
bitbucket (1570), Kirkland, Washington, USA Oct 3, 2008 Bottle, thanks hopdog! Pours translucent very dark brown with ruby lights and a thick and lacy tan head. Sweet aroma of brown sugar and chocolate. Silky full body, chewy, with light carbonation. Sweet taste of chocolate coffee and caramel, but not a big taste, and then whamo...a big and bitter chocolate pine finish. Overall, not a bad beer, but a little ’soft in the middle.’ The finish is more of a wakeup call than something that goes with the flow. Pours dark but not so very dark that one thinks Impy Stout based on the appearance. Tons of brown sugar and plum on the aroma. Lots of sweet molasses (not sticky) , again plums, hint of smoke, pie cherries, bits of chocolate. Perhaps not a fully fitting metaphor but this seems like a poor man’s Adam, less smoky, less leathery, but interesting and quite reasonably complex but more to the point, entirely enjoyable, not hot in the least. Nice! mwelsh13 (189), Maryland, USA Aug 28, 2008 12 oz bottle pours deep brown and black with a nice tan head that leave a ring around the collar of the glass. Great nutty and deep chocolate aroma. Dark fruit, coffee, and chocolate in the initial taste. Alcohol is very present. Very nice Imp Stout. A bit unbalanced, but nice. WeeHeavySD (1865), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Aug 23, 2008 Bonus I believe but from who I can’t recall shared with my girlfriend Cyn who loves the PA Beers. Pours black with a tan head. Nose is roasty. Taste is sweet and roasty and malty. Much better than i expected from the reviews. Roasty and not bad. badbeer (411), Iowa, USA Aug 18, 2008 Pours blackish with a beige head that retains pretty well and leaves some lacing. Smell is of caramel, malted milk balls, dark fruit, and some roast. Taste is of caramel, dark fruits, malted milk balls, milk chocolate, and ash. Higher than medium carbonation and medium/full body. Pretty good, age might help this one as it seems a bit hot right now.
