Commercial Description:
"Hofbrau" in German means "the brew of royalty." Trader Joe's Hof Brau Bock is a fine example of the regal brewing traditions still found in Germany today. This outstanding bock is golden in coclor, very rich and moderately hopped. 22 IBUS. Brewed with three types of imported malts, Hallertau aroma hops and lager yeasts.

Pours an orange/blonde color with an pretty nice looking head. Mediocre, slightly sweet smel; as another reviewer put it ’cereal’. Slightly hoppy. Kind of dry finish.. Alcohol is not entirely covered. Heller Bocks are not my favorite style and this is not my favorite heller bock.

Bottle. Bright golden. Cerealy aroma. Mildly syrupy but otherwise quite sessionable. (#3753, 11/25/2009)

Poured from bottle into clear cup. Bright and clear light orange with moderate white head. Aroma of sweet fruit and caramel with spicy noble hops. Very sweet fruit (cherry) and caramel, which turns a little spicy and bitter. Definitely a little too sweet and could use some more balancing hops. Moderate carbonation, medium chewy body that is almost syrupy. A Helles Bock really should have a drier finish. Considering the source and the price, it’s not too bad, but not worth seeking out. However, it’s a decent sipper and I am glad that Trader Joe’s made it at the appropriate high abv.

12 oz bottle from trader joes. Pours a clear golden amber with a creamy small white head. Aroma is lightly biscuit and toasty with a faint light fruit character interlaced with some floral hops. Flavor is very malty, a light honey and caramel character that is sweet and refreshing. Finishes with a sweet fruity character before a bit of an alcohol burn that fades quickly. Surprisingly rich medium body and a nice fizzy carbonation. I am surprised that this is so low rated. It isn’t amazing but definitely not bad.

12 oz bottle, pours a slightly rusty amber color with minimal head. Aroma was very impressive- sweet and malty with a little floral hoppiness. Very pleasant. Flavor was sweet like honey with moderate bitterness. Palate was full and rough but very enjoyable. Good beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours a thin head, which becomes a thin film, with slight lacing, over a clear dark golden (SRM 8) body....nose is cereal, sweet malts ( slight toffee), bit of biscuit....taste is cereal, slight sweet malts, with a sweet, minimal hop finish.....mouth feel is light to medium, carbonation high and fizzy. This meets, more or less, the criteria for a Heller Bock, but really lacks any sense of depth or richness out of the malt backbone. Additionally the head should have lasted longer (maybe more hops?), and the finish should have been less sweet (again more hops?).

Clear light amber with a fleeting head. Malty sweetbread aroma with some raw alcohol. Medium body. Malty, yeasty sweet bread flavors with too much alcohol showing. Mild spicy hop finish.

12oz bottle. One of a few meager choices at an after work party. It is what it is. What it is is bland, yet drinkable. I’ve had other Gordon Biersch offerings before that were pretty good so not sure why this one falls so short.
