| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 20, 2008 Poured into a snifter. Dark brown but clearly not black. Transparent if held to bright light. Thin ecru head fades quickly, little lacing. Aroma is stewed dark fruit with a dark toastiness and sweet grapes. Flavor is raisiny with caramel maltiness and a touch of the smoke and peat that was conspicuously absent from the aroma. Medium body and a sticky finish. Nothing outstanding but a very solid and traditional beer. More of a standard-setter than a boundary-breaker. daknole (3000), Scottsdale, Arizona, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 28, 2008 Bottle, total wine. brown color with a whitish head. Aroma is fruity and malty...seems like it might be sweet. And it is a bit sweet. I get some good fruity notes and some wood too. Not bad at all. Nandobier (24), Brazil

Tem uma linda cor castanho avermelhado, aromas de cacau e café, também presentes no paladar. Corpo longo. Encorpada. No final é possível notar o sabor de licor de cacau, mas não muito forte. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 19, 2008 12 oz bottle at the Moon and Sixpence in Portland. Red-Brown pour with minimal head. Smells of vinegar, plum and spices. Very spicy flavor that really hits the right spots. Interesting brew that I wish was a little cheaper so I could get a better feel for it. hobbersr (412), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Oct 18, 2008 Pours a very dark ruby red with a small head that moves to the edge of the glass pretty quickly. The nose is sweet, dried dark fruits with a hint of spice. Flavor is of dried fruits, raisins,a touch of oak, some smoke in the finish. Light carbination gives it a very nice feel, rich but slightly bubbly. Interesting beer. luvcasks (178), USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 13, 2008 Pours a beautiful dark brown with mahogany highlights and a surprisingly almost whitish head which does not last too long.
Nose: sweet malt with some vinous and heather like notes
Taste: Tangy vinous dark fruits and heater like almost comes across like soy sauce and dr pepper combined finishing with a lovely touch of smoke and Hop bitterness and flavor in the background coming across slightly spicy. As the beer warms up some raisin like flavors show up with chalky notes as well
Mouthfeel for the alcohol and malt richness still finishes nice and light with a long lingering raisiny and smoky finish
Overall: Still a classic so much complexity with a such a simple grain bill. The magical smokiness is wonderful a great beer to warm up to on a blustery fall evening
