Unspicy but still very Belgian-tasting, developing more liquorice, chocolate and raisiny fruit in the mouth, with a peaty smoked malt note and some alcohol glow. Tasty, complex, smooth, and falling somewhere between a pruney, malty dubbel and a silky Trappist heavyweight (Rochefort?). Nice. Brix (378), Denmark

Sweet malty aroma of dark, ripe fruits and prunes. Flavours of prunes, sweet fruits, yeast and chocolate. Very tasty and very complex. scotty (834), Scotland
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 16, 2008 A big complex brew, packed with malt and spicy/floral hops. Not as sweet as I’d expected for a beer of this abv, but a well balanced satisfying ale. Amber in colour, palate is dominated by roast malt and rich friut, finish lingers well. A cracker! radagast83 (1317), Fairfax, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jan 5, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark brown color. Aroma is roasted malts. The flavor is roasty and full of coffee and chocolates. Has a slightly smooth body to it. beerking99 (199), USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jan 2, 2008 Pours dark woody brown, with a slight haze, and red notes when held to the light. Aroma is very roasty, but with some fruity/estery notes, and hints of pepper. Flavor is roasty, with licorice character, and some dark fruits (figs and raisins). The dark malts dry it out quite a bit, but not unpleasantly so. Aftertaste is more licorice, and dark malts, expressing as coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium and very smooth. A nice beer, but I remember it being much more floral and complex. dolemite77 (184), Maryville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jan 2, 2008 Definitely a winner... you can tell that this is a bottom fermented beer, it tastes very clean and has somewhat of a lager "greenness" to it... not very hoppy, but the malt and the oak meld together nicely. Mostly dark dried fruits for flavor, with the oak in the background. The aftertaste really has the peaty flavor that some have mentioned. Does anyone know if this is new oak they ferment in? or if possibly it was once used for scotch? There is definately a hint of scotch (islay mainly) but it doesn’t seem strong enough to be in re-used casks... whatever... good stuff... yngwie (5080), Kristiansand, Norway
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Jan 1, 2008 Bottle. (RBNAG 07) Pours a clear, dark brown with a beige head. Quite sweet and malty aroma with a hint of peat. Caramel, roasted malt and some dried fruits in the aroma, not to forget the peaty notes. Quite sweet and malty finish. Full to medium mouthfeel. A nice and peaty beer I must rerate some day. (071103) llbjr77 (72), Largo, Florida, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Dec 31, 2007 Great taste: fruity and malty but left a slight bitter aftertaste. Good for a Scottish ale. Prefer Dutch ales but this was good.
