Pours dark reddish-brown but clear. Distinct peaty notes, which I like. Dry and hoppy. herbal but not fruity. Licorice in the aftertaste. scanovajr (361), Stanford, California, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Oct 4, 2007 33 cl bottle from Bieropholie, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.
App.: Deep copper, clear, smallish tan head.
Aroma: Big dark fruits, molasses, brown sugar, burnt sugar, caramel, cookie dough, vanilla, a little (almost) chocolate, a touch earthy and woody; rum, a bit of lighter fruit (like peaches and cherries, maybe), some bread, a little yeast; deep, rich and inviting!
Palate: Medium body, soft carbonation, smooth.
Flav.: Burnt sugar and “altbier malts” preside, the fruitiness is very subdued, definitely some wood , including vanilla, a bit of alcohol; dry, very dry; residual is a bit solvent-like with a little nuttiness and some lingering dry malt flavours.
When I hear “house ale”, I think “house wine” and this would be really kick ass as the run-of-the-mill offering. Doesn’t hold up to Jacobite, but maybe it shouldn’t have to. redgold07 (308), Irving, Texas, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Sep 30, 2007 Dark amber colour with a bubbly pour accompanied by a small bubbly head. Aroma consists of citrus and yeast. Flavor of citrus, lime, and tangy hops. Quite a bitter finish which is the only negative, to my tastes at least. Might make a nice beer for a cold day. I’d have another. mugabe (219), Sweden
