Floral and fruit notes behind a nice malt foreground of caramel. Alcohol is there, undisguised, but is not unpleasant. Expensive, but well-worth checking out. Papsoe (15107), Frederiksberg, Denmark

Lovely aroma of sherry and overripe fruit. Quite full-bodied with a very soft and smooth mouthfeel. Very complex flavour pattern with woody, oaky accents and vanilla, caramel, sherry, plenty of fruit and even some vitamin accents. The finish is dry. Very complex and pleasant. Another excellent Traquair brew. 180507 ucusty (1913), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 29, 2007 Bottle picked up from Evesham farm shop, 28-05-07, best before date of May 2016. Poured very dark ruby colour some carbonation but very little head. Had this after the Traquair House Jacobite and whilst another great beer it wasn’t quite in the same class as it was a little rougher and far less refined that the Jacobite. Rich fruity and nutty aroma tasted a bit like a Barley Wine but not quite as sticky. Some warming alcohol notes and tastes not as well disguised as they were in the Jacobite, finishes well and despite the sweetness there was some malts and bitterness. Very very good beer. after4ever (2809), Brier, Washington, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | May 17, 2007 300. Pours a deep grainy brown with a thin, filmy, bubbly layer of suds scraped over the top. Clingy bubbles at the top of the glass--visible against the body of the liquid. They show up when you slosh it around. Huge, sharp pruney and bready nose. Between the tight bubbles and the sharp nose, this one makes quite an entrance just sitting on the table. Surprisingly moderate attack, with plenty of dark fruit but nothing out of balance; there are tart notes in the mid-palate and a bit of roast. Mid-palate finished rather hollow. Biscuit and toast on the finish. This is a great little beer but for whatever reason it’s hard to imagine seeking it out at the preemption of another beer, even in this style. But I’ll definitely drink it again periodically. hepburn82 (141), Scotland

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 11, 2007 Bottle courtesy of ross. Pours a cloudy dark amber-brown with some small floaties and a large diminishing creamy tan head. Nice earthy aroma with caramel malt and fruit along with yeast, some spices, smoke and more -- there’s lots going on here. Earthy, roasty malt flavour with dark fruit, yeast, nuts, wood, alcohol and more -- complex and flavourful. Medium to full bodied. More akin to a Scotch Ale then an English Strong in my opinion but either way, it’s a fantastic beer and a joy to drink.
