Commercial Description:
Mainly available filtered in bottles, though part of the production goes unfiltered into cask.
The production of Traquair House Ale consists of an infusion mash, after which the wort is drawn off and boiled with the hops. The wort is cooled and pitched with bottom fermenting yeast under controlled temperature. It is then fermented in oak over a period of seven days. The beer is transferred into cold storage tanks or barrels and matured over a period of weeks. After maturation the beer is filtered prior to packing.

330ml bottle (bb.Dec.2014!) bought at Utobeer, Borough Market in Sept.05. Creamy, off-white head over a dark brown body. Rich flavours of black coffee and chocolatly maltiness. Vague bitter ending. Medium to full bodied.

Bottle: Reddish brown pour with a thin khaki head. Aroma, caramel, some fruits. Flavor, smooth and malty, some caramel, a hint of chocolate, some oakiness. Sweet fruity finish, very little in the way of detectible hops. Enjoyable, but I know I used to think this was a lot better than it is to me now.

Pours amber-red with medium off-white head that lasts moderately. Nose is candy apple, caramel, dates. Flavor very malty with smoky and toasted overtones, very nutty. Not fruity like a porter, rather more like a sweet Scotch Ale. Finishes rather sharp and spicy. Yum.

Dark reddish brown pour with a pretty sizeable light tan head that dissipates pretty quickly. Aromas are wonderful of dark fruit and toffee. Flavor is pretty excellent as well. Dark fruit and a sharp molasses/alcohol warmth mix nicely with a bit of a peat/earth undertone. Ends on a fruit note that has a bit of a spicey bite.

330 ml bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a small diminishing amber head. Aromas of cola, some fruitiness, hint of molasses and light smoke. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of sweet malt, dark fruit, a hint of wood and some light cola with a smooth finish. A good beer but not as complex as I expected.

Tasted 10/06/2006. 330ml bottle from Rumble’s, Wellington. Dark brown with ruby highlights. Tan foam rises, then diminshes to a soapy film with light lacing. Carbonation minimal. Mild port-like nose of poached plums - both sweet flesh and some sharper skin notes - with old fashioned oranges. Nicely balanced in the mouth: fruity esters, lightly tannic wood notes, toasty specialty grains, late season bitter oranges, and a sweet caramel base. The flavours come and go, mingling perfectly, getting better as I get through it - until it’s gone.... Woody notes linger, with a slight peppery note late on. Full and soft. Here’s tae us.

I appreciate this beer more each time I have it. The House Ale has a nice smoky aroma mixed with oak and spices. The pour is dark, but not quite jet black. I really like the complex flavor that this offers--very earthy, with plenty of roasted and smoky flavors coming through. Easy to drink with a great finish.
