ersma: sip slowly and remember the old toast "to the king o´er the water.", so stehts auf dem rücketikett in schöner schreibschrift. ein sehr dunkles ale, fast schwarz. schäumt mächtig auf, aber der schaum verschwindet (ale-typisch) schnell wieder. das bier hat einen unglaublich würzigen geruch. was nicht weiter verwundert, sind doch auf der zutatenliste neben quellwasser, malz, hopfen und hefe auch gewürze aufgeführt. dazu malzige süße. der antrunk ist entsprechend: röstmalzig, süßlich und sehr würzig. kann die gewürze nicht näher spezifizieren, zimt, kardamom, die richtung. schokoladig schmeckts auch. da gibts bei bto berufenere nasen für die genaue analyse. jedenfalls passts prima zur weihnachtszeit. im unterton leichte hopfige herbe, die zur mitte ausgeprägter wird, aber ohne der dominanten süße konkurrenz machen zu können. das ende komt ausgewogen süßlich-herb, die gewürznote klingt langsam aus. ein traum von einem bier. die süffigkeit leidet ob der aromavielfalt. dieses bier verweigert ein reinkippen. siehe oben. die flasche hat zwei schwarz-weisse etiketten, sieht alles handgemalt aus. wenn ichs recht verstanden habe, gibts bei dem haus ein tor, das zuletzt 1745 von bonnie prince charlie benutzt wurde. der ist vermutlich auch auf dem frontetikett gezeichnet. aus anlass der 250-jährigen torschließung wurde dieses bier 1995 aufgelegt. haltbar bis 2014, also durchaus noch am reifen. fazit: das zweite bier aus dem hause traquair und ein weiterer volltreffer.

2007 Bottle - Pours a rich dark amber with a large off white head...aroma is spicy malt, a bit fruity...flavour is similarly dominated by dark malt syrup, I get the coriander, and a bit of anise...it’s a thick brew, and gets a bit cloying without any bitterness...good fun though...

330 ml bottle. Deep brown color, tan head. Some wood and alcohol in the aroma. Dark malt flavor with spicy licorice notes and alcohol. Full body, light carbonation. I’m not impressed.

bottle 33cl from ølbutikken. dark brown with a reddish hue, small thick fine brown head. aroma of cheese, figs, peaches, alc. caramel. flavor is caramel, faint plums or raisins, spices, anise, well rounded and balanced flavor, some dark fruits in there too.i’d say it’s a barley wine tastewise. malts. bitterness and sweetness unite for a pleasant flavor experience. alc. is a little too noticeable.

Deep orange, syrupy brown color with smallish head, practically head only. Syrupy, sweet malty aroma with plums and hops. Sweet flavor is syrupy, licoricey, fruity and slightly Belgian style yeasty. Smooth palate is medium-bodied and slicky.

Bouteille de 330 ml. Nos yeux observent une bière de couleur rubis très foncée et un col de mousse modeste. Au nez on découvre des arômes de fruits rouges secs, de grain torréfié, de gâteau aux fruits, de café et d’agrumes. En bouche le corps est moyen avec une effervescence faible-moyenne. On goûte des saveurs de grain grillé, d’agrumes, de fruits secs et de houblon. La finale présente une bonne amertume citronné.

33cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Clear dark reddish brown colour, creamy off white head. Sweet aroma of molasses, chocolate, malts, candy, some alcohol. Flavour is sweet, malty, chocolate, with a slightly roasted, bitter alcohol finish. Soft carbonation. Good beer, but I expected it to be more fullbodied.

330 ml bottle. Deep dark ruby colour, very thin off-white head. Sweet aroma of dark fruits and berries, also some chocolate and roasted malts. Medium to full body, smooth carbonation. Plenty of liquorice and dark fruits in the flavour, warm and spicy finish. An excellent beer, complex and balanced.
