Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

330 ml bottle. Deep dark ruby colour, very thin off-white head. Sweet aroma of dark fruits and berries, also some chocolate and roasted malts. Medium to full body, smooth carbonation. Plenty of liquorice and dark fruits in the flavour, warm and spicy finish. An excellent beer, complex and balanced.

33cl bottle, ’07. Dark ruby, near black with a firm beige head. Buttery, sweet blackcurrant aroma, rye bread, musky liquorice and some herbs. Pretty different, though subtle. Intense old school salty liquorice flavor with old butter, black currants and earth. A bit ashy, herbal currant leafy finish. Almost full bodied, average soft carbonation. Interesting to see where this goes with age, now it’s still somewhat restrained. Goes nicely with some Incredible string band.

Pours to a dark brownish-red that glows when held to a light. Tiny, quickly dissipating head. Nose is sweet caramel and candy fruits. It’s very light on that palate making it very easy - and pleasurable - to drink. For such light fair it’s complexity is impressive. It’s sweet, slightly spicy and just a little tart. This beer is a dessert in itself, and masks it’s 8% ABV pretty well.

Bottled. Poured dark with a super thin head. Flavor was fruity and caramel, some raisins. Some malts, prety light for what it is. Worth forking over 8 bucks at the ol’ supermarket.

Pours a very dark red with a thing fading head. Big yeasty aroma of caramel, dark fruit, and bananas. Flavor reminds me a lot of a Rochefort 8 with less alcohol and more of a Scotch ale twist. The body is also much lighter than a trappist beer, almost watery, but not unpleasant. A very complex and satisfying beer.

This has been sitting unintentionally in the cellar for a few months. I finally discovered it the other day ad thought now was as good a time as any. After trying it I would not mind having another bottle. This time however I will pick it up when I am ready to drink it; let the store do the storage so I get one that is fresher.

Aroma / Appearance - A half finger foamy head combined with the ruby red body to create a picturesque beer. A thin sheet of lacing hinted at the promise to come. Cinnamon, spice, powdered chocolate, dates, and fig make it a sweet profile. It seems like a less alcoholic old ale but that could be due to the cellaring.

Flavor / Palate - Persimmons and plum fill the palate. Next comes an odd blend of dried mango, orange, and spice. This one is hard to pigeonhole but whatever it is I like it.

Dark brown pour with ruby red tint. Thin light tan head. Malty aroma with cream. Sweet oaky malt flavor with hints of chocolate caramel. Light citrus notes complement the coriander nicely. Very mild. Hides the alcohol very well. Some bitter hops on the finish.

Pours black with ruby edges and a tan head. Intense sweet malt aroma plus a candy sweetness. Some leathery yeast. Chocolaty nose, with dried fruits as well as wild berries and cherry. Prune and cherry flavours dominate with a sweet malt. Quite fruity. Surprisingly clean. Awesome.
