Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Bottle@Home. Very complex aroma, sweet, vanilla, pear, laurel, licorice and cinnamon. Not unbalanced but too much on the sweet side. Very dark brown color, light brown small head, good lace. Sweet, bitter, licorice, vanilla, lightly roasted, hint of chocolate. Strange moving mouthfeel between thin and full, soft overall. I was expecting much more. Out of balance in the flavor, too much on the sweet spice side.

Dark brown with a minimal head a nd little lacing, not surprising with 8% alcohol, though. Fruity and malty nose with some hint of spice. Taste is earthy with dark malts and fruit. The corriander is noticeable, but not overpowering. Smooth mouthfeel with light carbonation. Slight alcohol burn, but is pleasant and balances well with the overall beer.

Spiced aroma reminds me of mulling spices, pinecones and coffee. Very dark clear brown, faint ring of a head in the glass. Delicately complex, lots of dried wood, some orange peel. Low carbonation, smooth elegant mouthfeel, only a hint of the alcohol comes through.

Bottle 330ml. Poured a clear brown color with a small off-white head that diminished quickly. Good aroma of coriander, raisin and malt. Medium body with smooth texture. Good fruity bitter sweet flavor with long pleasing finish. Interesting brew.

Bottle from Nelsons Wines, drunk 4th Oct 08. Slightly hazy reddish dark brown. Fig, plum, alcohol on nose. Similar in the mouth, with liquorice, raisin, woodiness and a warmth at the end. Decently long finish. A good late night drink.
