Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

bottle. Aroma is fantastic. Caramel, smokey damp wood, yeast, raisin, and brandy. Deep amber chestnut brown with a small off-white frothy head that left no lace and mostly diminished. Really liked the aroma and look but that is where the love affair ended. Flavor is bitter with a sour finish. Palate is light bodied and watery. Man I thought this was going to be a gem but the palate was a real let down. The flavor is average at best. LAME!!

Pours dark brown/black with little to no head forming. Aromas of fruity apples, spice and some caramel malt in the background. A very smooth texture and flavour, with flavours of spiced apple at the forefront blending smoothly into a spicy vanilla flavour and ending with some bitter chocolaty malt.

33 cl bottle courtesy of a trade with cgarvieuk. Pours a deep chestnut with a thin-moderate off-white head that faded to a ring after the first sip and left a light coating of foam on the glass with each sip. Very pleasant aroma of malt, raisins, plums, cherries and some mild alcohol vapors. I am not picking up any spice in the aroma, but the fruit is quite lovely. The flavor is malt with a bit of chocolate and some very scant dark fruit. Definitely not as fruity or complex as the aroma. As the beer warms, the alcohol becomes more pronounced, especially towards the finish. Mild bitterness at the finish. Light-medium bodied, I would almost call it a tad thin. Glad I tried it.

Bottle at Bishops Arms, Karlstad, shared with Bananamaniac. Pours a dark brown color with a smell head. Aroma is spicy with notes of clove, malt, dried fruits, pine-needles and smoke. Flavour is first of all spicy, malty, slightly sweet, with notes of clove, pine-needles, dried fruits and smoke. Palate is smooth, filling, quite fullbodied and thick. Overall a very good beer, as all the other beers I’ve had from Traquair.

Bottle at the Moon and Sixpence in Portland, OR. Very intriguing and beguiling brew that pours a murky brown with a tiny head. Strong scents of dried fruit and smoke, but with a smooth taste that leaves you very fulfilled. As a man with a degree in history I also greatly appreciate the name and story. Silly Stuarts.

Pours a dark brown with a minimal head. The aroma isn’t terribly strong, but it’s nice... lots of cola and dark malts. The flavor has lots of cola as well, but some of the coriander pops through also. Pretty similar to Trois Pistoles... a good beer, but the mouthfeel could be thicker.

Bottle shared at tasting. Pours a medium to dark brown color with light beige head. Smell is chocolate and smoky peatiness. Taste is smoky, creamy and almost chocolatey but not quite. Creamy but light body and a lot like a scotch ale. Quite soft carbonation and a faint balance of hops. Decent overall.
