Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

33 cl bottle, Fargo, ND, USA via Winnipeg. Deep black, cola-like colour. Sweet plumb aroma with raisin flavor, reminiscent of port. Sweet finish with a faint warming alcohol mellowness. Very nice.

Bottle. Dark reddish brown beer with a small beige head. Strong spicy aroma has licourice and alcohol. Flavor is so rich with a bit sweetness, soft maltyness and quite bittery end. I like the saltyness very much. Body is nice and full. Maybe my favourite beer so far.

12 ounce bottle from Holiday Wine Cellar ($5.99). Pours a dark brown with beige head. Aroma of toffee, milk chocolate, brown sugar, spice. Lovely and delicate flavor of lightly roasted malts, milk chocolate, dark fruits and cherries, brown sugar. The coriander is there and more pronounced in the finish. Different, but an excellent brew.

Bottle at home. Dark brown with a small head. Aroma heavy malty (caramel, dark fruits, wood, spicy), light hoppy. Flavor heavy sweet, light bitter. Almost full body. Fine.

12 oz. bottle - dark brown with faint tan head; figs, spice, sugar and coriander; texture is thin and almost syrupy; coriander is very obvious; almost lovely, but a tad too much on the spice for my liking

Pours a burnt orange with a small ring for a head. Aroma is very odd and very different from any beer I’ve ever had. Fuzzy peaches, flowers, molasses, jube-jubes, spices, perfume, and alcohol. Very nice on the nose. Fuzzy peaches, licorice, jube0jubes, apples, cloves, cinnamon, flowers. Decent palate. Very good!

Tried a bottle of this for the first time, tonight. Colour... dark walnut with garnet hues. Nose... spice, molasses, turbinado and treacle sirup. Palate... a quick froth of C02 followed by slightly tangy burnt sugar, dark brown sugar, Christmas cake, sailor jack, dark raisins, golden sirup, and a long finish with hints of coriander! Here’s to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Stewarts, Frasers, Farquharsons, Camerons, Macintoshes and Macdonalds who fought with him on that fateful day at Culloden in 1746!!
