Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

12 oz bottle into pint glass. Pours a dark dark brown, almost black, with a creamy and tall beige head that unfortunately fades pretty quick. Aroma of molasses, candy sugar, sweet dark malt, cherries, molasses, honey, and more - subtle aromas keep coming out as it warms. Its flavors are also subtle and just as extensive - cherries, oak, vanilla, sweet malt, ... - really delicious and probably great with age. No signs of any alcohol, which is pretty stunning for the abv. This brew is unbelievably silky soft on the palate (the only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 was because it could be a bit thicker). Very soft carbonation. Overall: this stuff is tasty and might prove the be great with age.

0.33l - Pours a dark, cloudy red, fleeting small head, slight licorice on nose, licorice and caramel on palate. OK.

Pours opaque brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is wine and licorice with a bit of plum. Taste adds a malt and caramel component to the fruit flavor of the nose. Licorice is still there as well. Very nice beer.

Bottle (in NZ, at Galbraiths Alehouse), pours black with a bubbly yellow-brown head. A rich fruit aroma with lots of licorice and slightly salty. A deliciously thick palate, with roasted malt at the front of the tongue, sweeter syrupy malt at the back of the mouth, combining with molasses and tobacco flavours - complex! The oily finish carries dark berries before bittering nicely and leaving some smokey malt lingering long in the mouth. Just brilliant.

Bottle. Pours a blackish brown colour with a thin off-white head. The aroma is refreshing with distinct notes of...chewing gum (is it the swedish chewing gum jenka?). There are also notes of berries and some spices. Very odd - but it a good way! The flavour is quite sweet and malty with notes of berries and some fruits. There are also some roasted notes and a freshness. Very odd beer - but oh so good!

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with reddish hues. Aroma is spicy, a little grassy, a sweet molasses. The alcohol comes through in the smell. Taste is sweet and spicy, with hints of berries (maybe blueberry). and very well-balanced. Goes down very smooth, with a subtly spicy aftertaste.
