Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

lovely beer, definitely will seek this one out. smells wonderful and one you’ll remember, but at $5 a bottle, not something I’d buy all the time.

Bottle. Pours deep brown with no head. Aroma is dark, sweet malt with an herbal quality i can’t put my finger on, probably the coriander. Taste is big dark, sweet roasted malt, with a hint of coriander on the finish. There’s a soft underlying carbonation there that is belied by the complete lack of head. I can imagine this beer being perfect for a nicely charred, medium rare steak. beautiful.

Bottle best before June 2014. Pours a dark brown, kind of cola colored, with not much of a head at all. The aroma is sweet up front with not much spice to speak of. I do detect low levels of coriander, but it seems more like something that would be imparted from yeast rather than the actual seed. I found this one to be a bit sweeter than I would like an old ale, but it does have tasty hints of tobacco and pork. Hints at mead, dates, and figs are also present. This is a very drinkable beer but at quite a high price for what it is. I’d easily rather have a HoD Adam at this cost.

Pours brown, slightly hazy, with a medium tan head. Nose is spicy coriander, dates, molasses. Flavor is more of the same, with some cooked cherries and roasted malt flavors. I felt the mouthfeel was slightly sticky. Quite sweet. No hops character present. Very good.

Thanks to Capone’s in PA for introducing this one to me. One of the more unique brews I’ve had in a long time. Opened the bottle and gave it a sniff and was blown away by strong spices (coriander). Forced my mind to expect a lighter spring ale type of beer. Imagine my surprise then, when I poured it and saw a deep caramel brew with a thick white/off-white head. Gorgeous. And shocking! Flavor was consistent with the aroma. Strong spiciness, complemented with sweet malt and some other smooth flavors - brown sugar and/or molasses perhaps? Delicious. Smooth finish. Highly recommended.

From the bottle, pours deep brown with a two finger off white head. Nose is very nice and complex, with spice and malt. The coriander stands out in both aroma and flavor. There is also caramel and molasses in the flavor, which is very smooth. The mouthfeel is lively, yet creamy. Interesting and excellent ale.

Pours cola brown with tan head. Aroma of malts and some spices. Roasted malt flavor with corriander and slightly sweet. Alcohol comes through a little, but doesn’t take away from the flavor. Medium to full body with mild carbonation and a smooth creamy mouthfeel. An interesting brew, definately worth a try.
