Commercial Description:
The famous Bear Gates guarding the approach to Traquair House, near Pebbles, have been closed since 1745 - when the last person to pass through them was Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Now, 250 years later, the ancient Traquair Brew House celebrates the Jacobite cause by producing this potent spiced ale to a traditional fine recipe. Sip slowly and remember the old toast to the "King O'er the Water."

Dark cherry brown with thin head. Aroma is mostly corriander and fruit. Taste is a wonder of complexity. Corriander, pepper, malty sweetness and toasted malt. Very dry, slightly bitter finish. Love it.

Quite dark brownish red pour with large big-bubbly head. Malt, licorice, coriander, roasty notes are all quite present. This is a sipping ale, especially considering the price. Quite complex. One of my favorite labels, too.

Dark brown and not fizzy, tastes mostly like coffee. There is an underlying richness to it, it’s velvety somewhat. It was fairly good but I was disappointed. Very high price.

33 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with a deep redish hue and diminished light tan head. Plum fruity aroma. Mild malt, caramel and minor liqourice note too. Flavour is roasted malt with chocolate smoothness and bitterness. Light bitter and liqourice like bite following. Growing overripe fruity plum notes which gives reminiscence of Belgian trappist brews like Westmalle, Rochefort and a bit of St Sixtus. Dry yeasty spiced finish with a lingering fruit note. Nice one.

Bottle from Bitter Virtue. Darkish ruby colour. Liquorice edge to the roasted malts slightly sweet with musty earthy undertones which add a slightly aged vinous feel to the beer. This is quite subtly flavoured with different mouthfeels revealing new woody and fruity flavours. Not overly sweet and with nicely integrated layers of flavour. Much better than the others I’ve tasted.

Pours with a light brown, creamy, head, good lacing. Clear dark brown body. Aroma of coriander, curacao liqueur, tangarines, and some malts. Taste is of very refreshing bitter citrus. Ultra creamy mouthfeel with delicate carbonation. Great stuff.

Pours dark caramel with a reddish tinge. Minimal heads that fades quickly to a ring. Aroma of cherries, chocolate and caramel. Sweet malts present right up front, folloiwing throuch a whiskey taste to a finish of cherries and warming alcohol with slight bitterness. Very tasty ale.

Bottle - A much darker color than I imagined. Pours a dark brown with reddish tint. Tan head that did go away quickly. Very complex nose of raisen, malt, nuts and molasses. Very complex flavor with spice, pepper, alcohol and a coffee like bitter finish. Very warming and delicious.
